EXCUTIVE BRIEF FOR THE DISSERTATION THESIS TITLE PROPOSAL

Proponent Samantha Isabel V. Alarcon

Program Master of Education Major in English
Proposed Topic/Title To switch or not to switch, that is the question:
Effectiveness of Code-Switching in Teaching English to Second
Language Learners
Motivation of the Researcher Code-switching in the English classroom has been questioned and taken
as an issue for a while. Whether this approach is effective in learning
English as a second language has not yet been proven. Even so, teachers
are still forced to use Filipino in teaching English to beginner learners,
because of the fact that students still have difficulties in understanding
their second language. This research intends to determine whether there
are positive effects on using code-switching in teaching English in the
Philippines, even with many researchers stating that this only brings
about negative effects in acquiring the L2.

Research Gap Teachers, who teach English as a Second Language often

experience problems regarding how to relay information in
English, to students who are not yet familiar with the language.
Due to this, code-switching, or the act of alternation of two
languages, between a single discourse, sentence, or constituent
(Keller, 2016), is commonly exploited by the said teachers. With
this study, the researcher aims to fully understand the perception
of teachers and students in code-switching, the effectiveness of
code-switching in teaching English, and how its use can affects the
academic performance of English learners.

Statement of the Problem 1. What are teachers’ views on code-switching in English

classrooms?
2. What are students’ perceptions on teachers’ code switching
in class?
3. What are the reasons why English teachers code switch?
4. How effective is the use of code-switching to second
language learners?
5. How does teachers’ code-switching affect learners’
academic performance?

Research Design The qualitative research method is going to be used in this study;
to be more specific, phenomenology will be utilized to look into
the experiences of teachers and students who will be involved in
this study, to know their stand on the topic.

Respondents/Participants The participants of the study are the JHS students and teachers all
participants are from the following high schools in Arayat,
Pampanga: San Juan Bano High School, Justino Sevilla High
