Program Master of Education Major in English
Proposed Topic/Title Speak up! Students’ Perception on the Factors Affecting Speaking
Willingness and Motivation in English Classrooms: A
Phenomenological Study
Motivation of the Researcher English, being the international language, is the most popular foreign
language, which is used by all, making it the language that people should
be well equipped with. Speaking, on the other hand, is the language skill
probably most used and which language learners wish to perfect as soon
as possible, because it is the main ability used in communication.
Reluctance in trying to orally produce the language though brings to
waste the effort of learning a second language. The speaking ability
cannot be fully developed without practice. Opportunities to use the
language are very limited outside the classroom setting, which is why it
should be exercised fully, for there is no other chance aside from in the
classroom. In this regard, realizing the true cause of the problem on
students’ lack of willingness and motivation in speaking in English
classes could bring about a huge change in learning the said second
language.

Research Gap Speaking is one of the major skills used in communication, and the lack
of motivation and willingness to use it, makes second language learning
usage. This research is about students’ perception on the factors
affecting speaking willingness and motivation in English classrooms.
Many researchers have tackled a lot of problems in speaking using the
L2. Most of them only talks about the difficulties of students, lack of
motivation, unwillingness to speak, among any others. But none among
these have tried to have an in-depth clarification on the students’
perception or personal opinion regarding why they are not willing or
motivated to speak in English inside the class.

Statement of the Problem 1. Why are the factors that affect students’ readiness and
motivation in speaking in English inside the classroom?
2. What strategies can teachers come up with to improve
their students’ confidence and speaking skills in
English?
3. How can students overcome these language barriers on
their own?
Research Design The qualitative research method is going to be used in this study; to be
more specific, phenomenology will be utilized to look into the
experiences of teachers and students who will be involved in this study,
to know their stand on the topic. Qualitative research is exploratory in
nature, which aims to bring understanding about a topic based on
participants’ reasoning and opinion.

Respondents/Participants The participants of the study are the JHS students and teachers all
participants are from the following high schools in Arayat, Pampanga:
San Juan Bano High School, Justino Sevilla High School, and Camba
High School.
