1. Scope of document
This document provides meteorological and oceanographic parameters to be used in the design
of the BG offshore transhipment facility (OTF) which will be a floating storage and offtake
(FSO) vessel.

The location of the FSO is in the Southern part of the Campos Basin, at (22.9375S, -40.875W),
and is shown below.

Bathymetry and locations of interest in the Santos and Campos basin

2. Units and convention

This document uses the international system of units. Wind and wave directions are quoted as
direction where the wind/wave comes from relative to true north (°N), unless specified
otherwise – particularly, when time series are provided with this report in a different
convention (as given by Oceanweather), the related analysis follows the same convention as
the time series. Current directions are quoted as direction the current flows towards, relative to
true north (°N).

5.1.4 Storm durations

The distributions of spells of wind speed above 20 knots (10.3m/s), 25 knots (12.9m/s), and
35 knots (18.0m/s), over a period of 20 years of GF SAB data, are shown in the table and the
first three diagrams below. The fourth diagram shows the distribution of spells of calms below
20 knots. The interval between records is 3 hours and all durations are therefore considered to
be in multiples of 3 hours. The first bar in each diagram indicates storms (or calms) of one or
two records duration (3 or 6 hours); the second of three or four records (9 or 12 hours) etc..

5.1.5 Wind spectra

ISO (2005) provides a description of wind spectra and DNV (2010) provides several different
formulations for wind spectra.

ABS (2010) states that API (2007) recommends use of a wind spectrum for the design of
offshore structures and structural elements for which the wind load induced dynamic response
needs to be considered. The recommended API (2007) wind spectrum is based on the NPD
(Norwegian Petroleum Directorate or Froya spectrum) function with adjustments. Users are
referred to either API (2007) or ABS (2010) for the relevant equations.

ABS (2010) also recommends use of the Kaimal wind spectrum for non-cyclone wind
conditions, implying that API (2007) is intended more for cyclone conditions, while Santos
basin winds are of non-cyclonic type. Users are referred to DNV (2010) or ABS (2010) for
the relevant equations.

5.2 EXTREME WIND CONDITIONS

From: Campos DC. Wind speeds are in m/s.

Data source: Measured data in Campos Basin in period 10/1986 to 05/2003. Wind speeds are
10-minute averages at 10m elevation.

The source document indicates that the extreme wind speeds are 10-minute averages at 10m
above sea level. It notes that equivalent values for other elevations or durations can be
estimated based on factors given in DNV classification notes.

7.1.4 Storm durations

The distributions of spells of significant wave height above 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 5.0m,
over a period of 20 years of GF SAB data, are shown in the table and the first six diagrams
below. The seventh diagram shows the distribution of spells of calms below 2.0m. The
interval between records is 3 hours and all durations are therefore considered to be in multiples
of 3 hours. The first bar in each diagram indicates storms (or calms) of one or two records
duration (3 or 6 hours); the second of three or four records (9 or 12 hours) etc.

7.2 WAVE SPECTRUM

7.2.1 Bi-modal sea states
Bimodal sea states were identified using the partition between wind-sea and swell components
provided by Oceanweather. A sea-state was deemed bi-modal when the following conditions
were met:

• There is at least 10% of the total energy in each partition

• The peak periods for each partition were different by more than 3s OR the mean
directions different by more than 20°. These thresholds were based on the direction and
frequency resolutions of the spectral model used to generate the GFSAB data.

Occurrences Percentage
Unimodal sea states 27462 47.0%
Bimodal sea states 30978 53.0%

A detailed inspection of selected spectra show that some of the non unimodal spectra present
more than two modes, e.g. one wind-sea mode and two swell spectral modes with similar
periods, but different directions.
This section gives information about wind-sea conditions and swell conditions separately,
allowing the user to select and test conditions when more than two swells are present. Spectral
time series are also provided separately as a text file (FSO_wave_spectrum.asc, see Appendix
3).

Note: Conventions in this section (7.2) are as given in the spectral time series provided by
Oceanweather:
- wave directions are TOWARDS (relative to North)
- wind directions are from (relative to North)

7.2.5 Gamma factors

The spectral data provided by Oceanweather were partitioned into one wind-sea and several
swell components (as many as there are swell modes in each spectrum) using an
implementation of the method described in Hanson and Phillips (Journal of atmospheric and
oceanic technology,2001). Each partition was fitted to a Jonswap distribution to obtain the
gamma factors presented in this section. 74.9% of the partitions analysed were found to have a
gamma value of 1. The scatter plots presented in this section shows the spread of gamma
values that can be found for a given wave height, period or direction.

7.3.3 Joint exceedence extremes of large waves and high wind speeds
This section examines the dependence between large waves and high wind speeds, irrespective
of wave or wind direction, and provides and estimate of joint exceedence extremes for a range
of joint return periods of interest.

Simultaneous values of wind speed and wave height are plotted in the diagram below for every
record in the 20 year GF SAB series. It is not surprising to see a high dependence between the
two as the model wind speeds are used to produce the model waves. Statistical analysis
showed the BiVariate Normal (BVN) distribution best fitted to the entire distribution has a
correlation coefficient (ρ) of 0.6. However, the best fit to the top 1% of the records, above the
red lines in the diagram below and more representative of high and extreme conditions, has
ρ = 0.8.

8. Currents
Currents at the FSO location are primarily set by the Brazil boundary current, which flows
along the continental slope with a predominantly SW direction. Wind-driven currents are the
other contributor.

9. Combined currents, winds and waves

Wind and wave data are available from the GFSAB set for years 1990 to 2009 included. The
current is formed of three components:

• Wind-driven currents were calculated based on wind conditions given in GFSAB. It is

the only component of the total currents expected to be correlated with wind and wave
conditions;
• Tidal currents were extracted from TPXO for the same time period.
• Offshore current time series was produced using MyOcean data. For the time period
between 1993 and 2009, modelled monthly current time series were obtained. Daily data
were also available for 378 days in 2010/2011, and showed that there was significant
daily variability not captured in the monthly data set. Therefore a random perturbation
based on the standard deviation of the daily data set was added to the monthly values to
produce the offshore current time series. This method produces a data set that is better
adapted to fatigue analysis than the monthly values, although it assumes that the daily
variability in the offshore current is not correlated with the wind and wave conditions.
This is a reasonable assumption considering that oceanographic currents vary on
timescales slower than winds and waves.

The 3-hourly time series of combined current, winds and waves is provided as a text file
(FSO_combined_time_series.csv, see Appendix 3) for the time period 1990-2009. When no
offshore current data were available, current data are set as 1.#QNAN. Note that the wind and
wave data in the text file are reproduced as they are in the GFSAB data, i.e. wave directions
are towards (relative to North) and wind directions from (relative to North). Current directions
follow the oceanography convention and are towards (relative to North).

Plots presented in sections 9.1 and 9.2 show the scatter of conditions encountered at the FSO
for 8 wave and wind directional sectors. Similar plots for different current sectors were not
produced as the monthly data show that the current has a fairly constant direction. The scatter
in directions in the time series was mostly added as a random perturbation, hence no
conclusion can be drawn from it.

Note: Conventions in the following plots are as given in the time series:
- wave directions are TOWARDS (relative to North)
- wind directions are from (relative to North)
- current directions are towards (relative to North).

Appendix 2 Tables of significant wave height against

peak period, conditional upon wind speed

Hs is the significant wave height in metres

Tp is the peak wave period in seconds
U is the wind speed in metres per second
The first table is Hs vs. Tp for U<2, the second for 2<U<4, the third for 4<U<6, etc

Results expressed as numbers of 3-hourly records in given Hs, Tp and wind speed bins
P(H>H1) is the probability of Hs exceeding H1

Based on predictions for January 1990 to December 2009

Total number of records, across all wind speeds: 58440

Global Reanalysis of Ocean Waves Fine SAB: Project Description

Table 3 GROW-FINE SAB Wind and Wave Fields Definitions

Field Description
Date Julian format (where Jan 1 1900 = 1, Jan 2 1900 = 2, etc.)

Wind Direction From which the wind is blowing, clockwise from true north
in degrees (meteorological convention).

Wind Speed 1-hour average of the effective neutral wind at a height of

10 meters, units in meters/second.

Total Spectrum Wave Fields:

Total Variance The sum of the variance components of the hindcast

spectrum, over the 552 bins of the wave model, in meters
squared.

Significant Wave Height 4.000 times the square root of the total variance, in meters.

Peak Spectral Period Peak period is the reciprocal of peak frequency, in seconds.
Peak frequency is computed by taking the spectral density
in each frequency bin, and fitting a parabola to the highest
density and one neighbor on each side. If highest density is
in the .32157 Hz bin, the peak period reported is the peak
period of a Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum having the same
total variance as the hindcast spectrum.

Vector Mean Direction To which waves are traveling, clockwise from north in
degrees (oceanographic convention).

First Spectral Moment Following Haring and Heideman (OTC 3230, 1978) the
first and second moments contain powers of ω = 2πf; thus:
M1 = ∑∑ 2πfdS where dS is a variance component and
the double sum extend over 552 bins.

Second Spectral Moment Following Haring and Heideman (OTC 3230, 1978) the
first and second moments contain powers of ω = 2πf; thus:
M2 = ∑∑ (2πf ) 2 dS where dS is a variance component
and the double sum extend over 552 bins.

Dominant Direction Following Haring and Heideman, the dominant direction ψ

is the solution of the equations
A cos 2ψ = ∑∑ cos 2θπdS
A sin 2ψ = ∑∑ sin 2θπdS

oceanweather inc Page 11

Global Reanalysis of Ocean Waves Fine SAB: Project Description

The angle ψ is determined only to within 180 degrees.

Haring and Heideman choose from the pair (ψ, ψ+180) the
value closer to the peak direction.

Angular Spreading The angular spreading function (Gumbel, Greenwood &

Durand) is the mean value, over the 552 bins, of cos(θ -
VMD), weighted by the variance component in each bin. If
the angular spectrum is uniformly distributed over 360
degrees, this statistic is zero; if uniformly distributed over
180 degrees, 2/π; if all variance is concentrated at the
VMD, 1. For the use of this statistic in fitting an
exponential distribution to the angular spectrum, see
Pearson & Hartley, Biometrika Tables for statisticians,
2:123 ff.
Angular spreading (ANGSPR) is related to cosn(θ)
spreading as follows:
n = (2*ANGSPR)/(1-ANGSPR)

In-Line Variance Ratio Directional spreading by Haring and Heideman, p 1542.

Computed as:

Rat =
∑∑ cos (θ −ψ )ds
2

∑∑ dS
If spectral variance is uniformly distributed over the entire
compass, or over a semicircle, Rat = 0.5; if variance is
confined to one angular band, or to two band 180 degrees
apart, Rat = 1.00 . According to Haring and Heideman,
cos^2 spreading corresponds to Rat = 0.75.

Wave Partition Fields (Sea/Swell): Explanation of sea/swell computation:

Total Variance of “Sea” Partition The sum of the variance components of the hindcast
Peak Spectral Period of “Sea” Partition spectrum, over the 552 bins of the wave model, in meters
Vector Mean Direction of “Sea” Partition squared. To partition sea (primary) and swell (secondary)
Total Variance of “Swell” Partition we compute a P-M (Pierson-Moskowitz) spectrum, with a
Peak Spectral Period of “Swell” Partition cos3 spreading, from the adopted wind speed and direction.
Vector Mean Direction of “Swell” Partition For each of the 552 bins, the lesser of the hindcast variance
component and P-M variance component is thrown into the
sea partition; the excess, if any, of hindcast over P-M is
thrown into the swell partition.

Directional wave spectra: FSO_wave_spectrum.asc

Time series of directional wave spectra are attached to this report, as provided by
Oceanweather. Frequencies are given in Hz, and direction are in degrees towards, relative to
North. The integrated parameters have the same name and units as in the time series
FSO_combined_time_series.csv. The spectral energies are given as total energy [m2] per bin.

The next pages, extracted from the GFSAB report, provide:

• a description of the wave spectra

• a sample spectral output
• a FORTRAN program that can be used to read the spectral data.

Wave Spectra Description and Sample Output

Please refer to sample table below. The top of the file indicates the number of frequencies and
directions per table as well as the number of time steps and the number of grid points per time
step within the file (not shown). It is followed by one blank line. Every table is 32 lines long,
with 5 header lines (the fourth one is blank), 24 data lines, and 3 footer lines (the last one is
blank). The first line of each table includes the latitude, longitude, angle, and water depth.

The second line is a character string indicating which variables are located in the third line and
include wind speed, wind direction (measured from which), peak period, sea and swell partitions
as well as significant wave height and is followed by a blank line. The next line gives the
nominal frequencies of each frequency bin. Within the 24 data lines, directional bands are
identified at the left. The 552 element array contains the variance components (NOT spectral
densities) for 23 frequencies and 24 directions. The 24 directional bins, each 15 degrees wide,
are numbered clockwise from north; the first bin, with a nominal direction of 7.5 degrees,
extends from 0 to 15 degrees. The sum over all the frequencies per one direction band is given
in the right most column.

Frequency bins are spaced in geometric progression (to facilitate the computation of
interactions); the nominal frequency is the geometric mean of the two ends (see table below
format explanation). The frequency ratio is .75**(-1./3.), i.e. 1.100642416; this ratio was chosen
in preference to the 1.1000 of official WAM to simplify interaction formulas. The first 22 bins
are straightforward; the last requires explanation. The 23rd frequency band is an integrated band
comprising what would be bins 23 through 44 (continuing the geometric progression) of a fully
discrete bin system. To model the cascade of wave energy from high to low frequencies
endorsed by non-linear interactions, we compute interactions involving bins out to 44. This
requires a parametric assumption about the spectral density between 0.30652 and 2.52741 Hz;
and the customary assumption is that density is proportional to omega**(-x), where x is a
disposable parameter. We are using x = 4.5 for the following reasons:

(1) There are quasi-physical arguments supporting the exponents 4 & 5. The exponent 5 is
germane to a Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum.
(2) A crude energy balance computation in the tail, with wind input scaled as omega**2 and
interactions scaled as omega**11, shows that 4.5 is the only exponent capable of yielding an
equilibrium spectrum in the tail.

To compute a "density" at 0.32157 Hz, we compute what fraction of the integrated band belongs
to the bin from 0.30652 to 0.33737 Hz. Sparing a few details, the result is:
dens = (variance component)*rbw
where rbw (dimensions seconds) is a function of the exponent as follows:
x rbw
4.0 8.11849
4.5 9.24794
5.0 10.32933
The sum of the energy per frequency (over all directions) is given in the first footer line. The
second footer line contains the "density" as explained above.
