Lecture 10: All Chords in Every Major Key

Start by finding C.

R1

Form the C triad. (NOTE: We can use R1-R3-R5 fingering for all of these)

R1 R3 R5
C E G
Move each note of the triad up one note of the C scale. (Remember, there
are no sharps or flats in C so we are playing only the white notes)

This forms the 2nd triad in C. The chord is a D minor.

D F A

Move all three notes up again.

This is the 3rd triad in C. The chord is an E minor.

E G B
All three up again.

This is the 4th triad in C. F major.

F A C

Move all three notes up again.

This is the 5th triad in C. It’s a G major.

 G B D

Up again with all three notes.

This is the 6th triad in C. This is A minor.

A C E
Move each note up one more.

This is the 7th (and last) triad in C. It’s a B diminished.

B D F

The 7 chords in every key are.

1 - major
2 - minor
3 - minor
4 - major
5 - major
6 - minor
7 - diminished (like will play this as the 5th chord with the 7th note in the bass)

So… 1-4-5 major; 2-3-6 minor, 7 - odd ball diminished

Closing Thoughts: This patter holds across the keyboard, sharp and flat keys
included.

Homework: 1. Memorize this: 1-4-5 major; 2-3-6 minor, 7 - odd ball diminished
2. Play all the chords in C, D, F, G. Move on the Bb, A, E, and Eb. Then
move to others until you have played all the chords in every key.
