Problem Solving Final Draft 3
My 9th grade Interdisciplinary project was on Malaria, which was completed in the first
semester of my freshman year. The purpose of this assignment was to research information about
the disease, use credible sources, understand the effects on people, and show how to prevent it
from being an issue. My group members and I had to identify what Malaria was and how it is a
problem in communities in developing countries. Afterwards, we had to build ideas on ways we
can educate the audience with information about treating Malaria or preventing an epidemic.
There were things that had to be analyzed including statistics of those who were infected, which
helped our group contemplate on creating a community action plan.
This assignment fits in the problem solving category because we addressed a complex
problem that occurs in Malaria, and our group seeked on finding solutions through
multidisciplinary thinking. Our group create a song to inform our audience about the issue. We
hoped that the song would give a clear message on the egregious outcome that can occur from
Malaria. We informed our audience about how to prevent an epidemic on Malaria.
My 11th grade Interdisciplinary project was on Lead Toxicity. The purpose of this
assignment was to address the issue our community has with lead contamination. Our group

analyzed and used our findings to prevent lead from entering our water pipes and explained its
effects. The purpose of our research was to educate our community members about what is lead
and whether it is found in our community. Tests were conducted on two plants, one with tap
water from an average sink and the other with arrowhead water. A hypothesis was made that the
plant with tap water would not survive. In the end, our hypothesis was correct. The plant with
arrowhead survived longer. Afterwards, we tried identifying the reason of the plants death from
regular tap water, and we concluded that there would be lead. However, the tap water did not
contain lead, but it still contained toxins that made the water contaminated . This proved that we
didn’t have lead in our water. This assignment fits the problemsolving category because my
group and I educated our audience on a problem and presented a solution that would prevent the
contamination of lead in our water.
Student learning outcomes that I met in both IDP assignments was thinking critically, and
becoming an effective communicator. I thought critically by evaluating our issue and used
resources to create a solution that was beneficial to our communities. I also analyzed the data of
the plant’s growth. As an effective communicator, I was able to inform my solution to my
audience and be confident as well.
This experience has allowed me to grow as a student. For instance, during my first IDP I
was nervous to look at my audience. However, with more presentations, I was able to improve
on skills I lacked before. My analyzing, communicating, overall presentation skills have

improved significantly. The SLO’s I developed helped me grow and develop my academic skills.
Although I am better at presenting and doing projects, I still need to ask more questions and not
procrastinate. One reason I seem to procrastinate is that I usually come home late, due to being in
sports, and I wouldn’t do my work right away since I was tired. Now, I am able to complete my
work much sooner by organizing my time and following through with my commitments. Even
though I have good grades, I know that I need to continue staying on task and I’ll continue to do
better. Overall, being an effective communicator and critical thinker has been present in my
IDPs. Each IDP has allowed me to grow as an individual, and has given me more structure in my
life.
