Discuss the logic behind Mark Zuckerberg’s claim that ‘the age of privacy has come to an end’ in

300 words or less.

Mark Zuckerberg in an interview of January 2010 proclaimed that the “age of privacy” has come
to an end. Zuckerberg’s announcement leads to a different point of view among people, some
support but majority disagree on his statement. Majority people appeal on violation of their
privacy in internet. Supporter of Mark Zuckerberg is more open minded in this issue, they believe
twenty-first century is a new era that emphasize on concept of openness and transparency which
also known as an age of “information exhibitionism.”

As years grow, privacy policies of Facebook hold had faced an evolution from its former policy in
2004 which allow Facebook’s user broadly accessibility in their privacy settings. A few actions
taken by Zuckerberg had violated Facebook privacy such as introduced the Beacon Programme
in 2007 and enrolled all Facebook subscribers into its facial recognition program without notice in
2011. It occur an unfairness when the exposure of users’ names and profile pictures to other
party without their explicit consent, pays and knowledge of their information usage in Sponsored
Stories.

In contrast, Facebook share the user information to increase its revenue and profit such as
launching a mobile advertising product that pushes ads to the mobile news feeds of users which
happens in May 2012. Facebook also agreed In February 2013 to partner with all data marketing
companies such as Acxiom, Epsilon, and Datalogi to deliver targeted ads based on offline data.
In June 2013, Facebook announced the introducing of searchable hashtags. The evolution of
Facebook as years grow show that it has step moving forwards from its initial origins as a place
for friends to connect and toward a public platform where what one posts becomes part of a
public conversation.
