Test wind mast in a forest area delivers surprising results

In regions with complex topography such as forests and minor mountain ranges, the actual
wind conditions are difficult to predict. After one year of operation, a test wind mast installed in
a forest in the Northern Bavarian delivered surprisingly positive results. TÜV SÜD’s wind experts
have operated the 140-metre mast since October 2012 to assess the viability of the site and for
research purposes.

The measurement
results in detail
TÜV SÜD’s test wind mast is located in
Hessenreuther Wald, a forest region in the
Bavarian district of Tirschenreuth, where the
local energy initiative, Natural Energy Solu-
tions GmbH & Co.KG, plans the construction
of a wind farm with up to five turbines. The
project partner also uses the data measured
by the test wind mast for ensuring opti-
mum turbine design. A total of seven cup
anemometers and three vanes at heights
between 60 and 140 metres continuously
measured wind speed and wind direction

of roughly 100 metres, the measured data (black line) show a visible blip, with wind speeds increasing drasti-
cally from that height. The zone below is marked by high turbulence intensity caused by the trees in the forest. these data, the wind experts mapped the

trees and topography.

Wind speeds higher than predicted

At a mean speed of 7.0 m/sec, winds at a
height of 140 m above ground exceeded ex-
pectations based on the models and forecasts.
The peak wind speed measured by the sen-
sors was 30.8 m/sec, with the prevailing wind
directions east and west (Fig. 2). Mean turbu-
lence intensity was 10.4 per cent at a height
of 140 metres and increased dramatically
in lower layers due to the complex surface
features and the trees. At a height of around
100 metres the wind profile includes a visible
blip (Figure 3) – an important design criterion
for the projected wind turbines, which are de-
veloped to harness the wind above the zone
of wind turbulence and must be dimensioned
for the turbulence intensity prevailing on site.
Figure 2: The measured data show pronounced variance over the course of the year. Measured wind speeds

The hidden potential of industrial lubrication

Lubrication is one of the most important elements within the field of industrial maintenance, since
it ensures the efficient working of the machines. It is a field with huge potential for lowering costs,

How to reduce wearing on gears

From the beginning of the wind energy industry, 30 years ago, wind turbine models have grown
up to high energy power per each wind turbine. This power installed per wind turbine leads to the
needing to optimize the maintenance and to increase the reliability; a new technical challenge for
wind turbine designers. A lack of lubrication can bring WTGs to a standstill. The increased cost
of lubricants and maintenance duties, coupled with a higher equipment value, drives the need
for automatic and centralized lubrication systems.

WEG ELECTRIC MOTORS

WEG helps to generate hydro-electricity

A project delivered by Southeast Power Engineering has seen a mini power station being installed

targeted to produce a combined output The W22 units are specials in that they
are generators based on a W22 motor, the
reason being that in this application; when
the screws need to be re-started, electric-
ity is used to start the screws turning and
then as the speed increases, so the motor
function is changed over to a generator
and the rotation of the screw is maintained
by the water which in turn maintains the
generator speed to produce the electricity.
Efficiency was a key target for this applica-
tion as the installation has a fixed ROI period,
at 96% efficiency the WEG motor/genera-
tors represented one of the best investments
Southeast Power could make in the power
transmission design to ensure their six year
ROI target was met. The installation has a
minimum guaranteed design life of 15 years
and Southeast Power has a 40 year tenancy
of the site, so reliability and longevity were
also very important considerations – if the
screws stop turning then there is a direct
consequence in terms of revenue.

David Dechambeau comments, “In order

to make this project sustainable, it was
essential that we selected the most effi-
cient equipment for the construction of
this power station. The design called for a
reliable generator with superior efficiency
ratings and on balance the WEG compo-
nent definitely fitted the criteria and it was
straightforward to install.”
The most complicated part of the project
was to ensure that the screws turn at the
correct speed to ensure that the gearbox,
which has a set gear ratio, turned the gen-
erator at the correct speed to allow a con-
sistent 50 Hz supply. Maintaining the most
efficient output means having a system of

ANALYST AT CSP TODAY

Gauging the South African CSP landscape to 2024

South Africa is one of the most promising emerging markets for Concentrated Solar Power
(CSP). It has abundant solar resources, a strong need to develop a new source of energy and a
robust incentive scheme from the Government. So what is the latest from this market and what
can we expect from 2014 onwards?

How suitable is South Africa for CSP? for CSP. The annual electricity demand of South Africa, which relies upon coal for

Africa’s market is craving increased en-

deposits, the increasing demand for en-

ultimately has limited reserves in oil and
natural gas. At the moment, the country
relies on electricity production by State-
owned Eskom, a company that has a

Not only private households can use solar electricity – it is even more interesting for industrial
companies. All it takes are a photovoltaic installation and an intelligent storage system that
can deliver electricity on demand to the various consumers. A German machine construction

Hydrogen is envisaged as an alternative fuel in the near future through its use in a fuel cell
electric vehicle (FCEV), where it combines with oxygen from the air to create electricity via an
electrochemical process. In 2015 the first series-produced FCEVs will hit the road. In a first
