The Story of Kripa
In 1981, in the simple environs of a church compound in Bandra, Kripa (a Sanskrit word meaning
“grace”) was born with a priest, a doctor, a recovering alcoholic and three patients in attendance. In
just over two decades, Kripa has grown into the largest non-governmental organization in India help-
ing people suffering from chemical dependency and HIV infection. Today there are 59 facilities in
11 states in India – Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Gujarat, New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal,
Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Meghalaya.
There are demands for services from other states like Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil
Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal.
Mother Teresa, one of the guiding spirits of Kripa blessed the Calcutta and Vasai Centers and had
always been a source of strength and support to Kripa over the years.
Kripa’s strength has been its unique blend of Western techniques e.g., the 12 Step programme of the
Alcoholics Anonymous, the Minnesota Model of Therapeutic Communities and Eastern disciplines
like Yoga and meditation, Vipassana practice, Chinese T’ai Chi Chuan and Japanese Shiatsu. Kripa
today enjoys one of the highest short and long-term recovery rates in India and the Kripa model is
being replicated in centers around the world.
Kripa inculcates a change in lifestyle and highlights the need to study risk perception, effectively as-
sist in harm minimization and train affected individuals to monitor life as an ongoing process of
spiritual growth.
Kripa’s broad spectrum of services to the community includes Training of Trainers in Chemical De-
pendency & Rehabilitation, and facilitating the work being carried out by law enforcement agencies,
educational institutions and other academic institutions involved in human services. A major area of
work involves supporting organized industry through the Employees Assistance Programme (EAP) /
Occupational Health Care for employees, under the aegis of the International Labour Organisation
(ILO), New Delhi Office, using a Community Based Rehabilitation Programme model. Currently we
are also conducting enhanced Peer Led Intervention programmes for Prevention of HIV among In-
jecting Drug Users in Dharavi (Maharashtra), Kohima (Nagaland), Shillong (Meghalaya) and Imphal
(Manipur) with funding support from the United Nations Office on Drug & Crime (UNODC), Re-
gional Office for South Asia, New Delhi.
Since 2002, Kripa’s involvement with its inclusive approach to HIV/AIDS care has been clarified
through various projects under the Kripa-AIDS initiative. Initiated through a Home Based Care ser-
vice with support from the Catholic Relief Services in Vasai Taluka in Thane District, The Vasai Re-
gion AIDS Control Society (VRACS) was born to cover a target population of around fifty thousand
people and soon added a Targeted Interventions component with support from the AVERT Society
(funded by USAID). Through a Networked Initiatives for Community Empowerment (NICE) model,
VRACS provides Surveillance, Management & Care, Awareness, Research & Training (SMART)
services to the community. After seven years of field-testing, the response and results are extremely
gratifying. It is Kripa’s intention to see this model reproduced in other areas of the country keeping
in mind the need to allow variations based on specific sociological and ethnic needs in other commu-
nities.
