The 2010 Holiday season is approaching just as fast as the cars at our track, which means it’s time for VIRginia Interna-
tional Raceway’s annual Holiday Laps charity benefit. This is the public’s annual opportunity to take their vehicles out onto
the historic 3.27 mile VIR track while helping others out at the same time.

Proud To Be An American
Thank a Veteran at Work
Few Americans are aware that only six
percent of U.S. citizens have served in
the Armed Forces -
From the VA: With the help of the
White House and VA, HISTORY (the
History cable channel) encourages
the remaining 94 percent to say thank
you to the brave men and women who
have sacrificed to protect our country as
Veterans Day approaches. HISTORY has
enlisted the First Lady and Dr. Biden to tape a public service
announcement it will run in conjunction with Veterans Day
and has joined forces with the VA to encourage companies
and organizations to salute Veterans in the workplace this fall
through the “Thank a Veteran at Work” program. VA program
offices and facilities are encouraged to spread the word about
the “Thank a Veteran at Work” campaign to businesses, Veter-
ans organizations and government agencies they work with.
A “Thank a Veteran at Work” guide and poster are available
on line at http://www.history.com/topics/take-a-vet#a1 and
“Thank a Veteran” stickers can be ordered free at veterans@
aetn.com. Additional Veterans Day posters and materials for
teachers and students, including a new Veterans Day video,
are available on the VA Veterans Day Web page at http://
www1.va.gov/opa/vetsday/.
National Veterans Day Ceremony
The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year on
November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery . The ceremony
commences precisely at 11:00 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial
Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries. The ceremony is intended
to honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces.
The Veterans Day National Committee also selects a number of regional sites for Veterans Day observances throughout
the country. From stirring parades and ceremonies to military exhibits and tributes to distinguished veterans, these events
serve as models for other communities to follow in planning their own observances.

A Brief History of Veterans Day

Where does the term “veteran” come from? Originally, the word veteran meant “a person of long experience” or skill.
Derived from the Latin term veteranus, after the American Revolution the word veteran came to be associated spe-
cifically with former soldiers of old age who had fought for independence. As time went on, “veteran” was used to
describe any former member of the armed forces or a person who had served in the military. In the mid-19th century,
this term was often shortened to the simple phrase “vets.” The term came to be used as a way to categorize and
honor those who had served and sacrificed through their roles in the military. World War I, also known as the “Great
War” was officially concluded on the 11th hour of the 11th Day of November, at 11 A.M. in 1918. On November 11th of
the following year, President Woodrow Wilson declared that day as “Armistice Day” in honor of the peace. (The term
armistice means “truce” or the end of wartime hostilities.) This day was marked with public celebrations and a two min-
ute halt to business at 11 AM. In 1921, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was dedicated in Arlington Cemetery with a
ceremony on November 11th. After this dedication, Armistice Day was adopted in many states and at the federal level
as a day to honor veterans. This was made official in 1938 when an act of Congress made Armistice Day a national
holiday. In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower changed the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day. For several years
in the 1970s, Veterans Day was observed in October by many states but in 1978 it was returned to November 11th.
Today, Veterans Day is still observed on November 11th as a national holiday to honor all veterans of the United States
Armed Forces. (If November 11th falls on a weekend day, the holiday is observed the following Monday.) Throughout
the nation, Americans participate in parades, ceremonies, and observances to pay their respects to our servicemen
and women, both past and present.

DARWIN MOTORCYCLES DEBUTS THE  BRAWLER GT3 AT THE
AMD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP OF CUSTOM BIKE BUILDING

Darwin Motorcycles introduces the new - for - 2011 performance-

oriented Brawler GT3 at the AMD World Championship of Custom
Bike Building and came away with second place in the Production
Class. The motorcycle is inspired by the rubber-mounted Harley-
Davidson  FXR-styled chassis.
Holdsworth, Darwin Motorcycles’ BossMan, designed the Brawler
as a convertible. It handles well on long trips or across town. The
bike utilizes inverted forks and an FXR style 2-shock design that
has been tuned by Suspension Technologies. Mid controls and
tracker style handlebars are integrated into the design to deliver a
mild, café racer riding position that provides comfort and control.
As the gas tank is designed with knee dishes in the Bonneville
tradition so the rider can tuck in behind the fat tank to reduce wind
resistance. The inverted forks, performance shocks, and extended

swingarm provided a firm yet plush ride.

The bike boasts a flagship of American suppliers
including  Mean Street 56mm  inverted narrow front
end, Baker FLT oil under tranny, S&S 124” Hot Rod
engine, D&D Performance Enterprises’ ceramic-coat-
ed concentric-flow baffle system, Brass Balls/Leroy

How Comfortable
Is Your Ride?
By Kevin G. Charleville

I always try to visualize trips that I have taken in the past,

and try to think of things that I would do differently. One
thing that I learned from my first long trip that I took was
to purchase a more comfortable seat. I normally do not
have back pain, but I did that trip. I was concerned that
purchasing a new seat would not solve the problem. I
was concerned that the manufacturer’s claim of a more
comfortable seat could be false. However, I was totally
amazed and very satisfied of the difference it made. When
I first started riding, a close friend of mine from Memphis,
Tennessee, told me something that I think about often. He
said, “That when a person rides, they need to be as com-
fortable as possible to fully enjoy the experience” Although
quite an obvious thing to say, it does make total sense. I
can also see the safety factor in this as well. Being un-
comfortable on a bike can cause you to not be as alert as
one should be, because being uncomfortable can cause
distractions, mentally and physically. I have heard many
riders, (riders and passengers) complain of back pain over
the years. Some have back pain anyway, whether you ride
or not, and some have chronic problems from disease,
previous accident, or even stress. Whether going on a
long ride or short, and you experience back pain, here
are some tips that may help ease the stress on your back.
Regular exercise with abdominal and lower back muscle
strengthening, talk to your doc about back stretches you
can perform, or just Google back exercises and stretches.
If you suffer from chronic back pain, there are several
over-the-counter medications and prescription medications
that may help your cause. However, before you self medi-
cate with over-the-counter or prescription meds, please
talk to your personal doc first, because medications some-
times affect people in different ways which could make for
a dangerous situation. Finally, there are many products
out on the market to help make our ride more comfortable.
The best thing to do is try before you buy, and if that is
not possible, read the reviews about the products prior to
making a decision. Ride free, ride safe, and please take
care of the children.

BAGGER BUILT FOR SPEED RECORD
Story and Pics By Terri “T” Collier, TRM Oklahoma editor
Specs By Sam Wills, Racing Innovations

Go, Dog. Go! – written by PD Eastman, Was one of my favorite

children’s books as a child. Little did I know, that years later, I’d be
repeating that saying over and over in my head as I drove to a mo-
torcycle photo shoot in Oklahoma City. I was headed to do a shoot
on a bike built by Racing Innovations for Big Dog Motorcycles and
S&S Motors. Sam Wills, a former motorcycle racer, had made up
his mind that he could build a bagger motorcycle that could go over
200mph, crushing the world record. In doing so, it was a natural for
him to share this idea with Big Dog Motorcycles and S&S since Sam
himself, rides the Big Dog Bulldog Bagger.
I watched this bike being built over the summer. It was interesting
to watch a regular street bike turn into a mad dog on a chain, ready
to burst out and eat the world! And that she did!
Sam built the bike with the help of Racing Innovations builders,
Shaun Norris and Delvin Clark. Before he could try the record
at Bonneville Salt Flats, he took it to Sturgis for its unveiling and
display. I saw it there with the Big Dog Motorcycles display where
many a dreamy eyed rider salivated over it. Mid-week, Sam pulled
out of there and headed to the Salt Flats to meet up with the crew,
Shaun, Delvin and Bruno.
He shared the many challenges which the Salt Flats present which
seemed nearly endless as he described them. First and foremost,
it costs $600 to enter the motorcycle. Then Sam, the rider, had to
be licensed in order to set the record. After a couple steps up in
speed from 125 mph, he received his Class C 175 mph license. He
must wear full armored leathers with no openings for safety. Then
came the rules, plenty of rules are mandated. They have a manda-
tory 118 octane leaded fuel that must be purchased from the
track. The track itself is a feat to get to with nearly 20 miles
between the pit area and the 3 mile track. Sad but true,
the crew went thru two Four Wheelers in pulling the bike to
the starting line and had to resort to pulling it with the motor
home towards the middle of the week. They said it was a
bit embarrassing at first, but that being said,
they became very popular with the pit
stewards and people at the track.
You see, there is NO shade
out on the flats by the track so
the crew flocked to the shade
behind the motor home as it
pulled to the starting gate, often
handing out a few cold drinks.
Back to the high speed
record! It’s no easy street there
as you must wait in long lines to get a
run on the track. Each person must
finish and clear the track ahead of you
prior to your positioning. Now remember
this track is 3 miles long. Once he made a
pass, he was timed at different intervals on
the track between the 1 and 3 mile marks.
Between 1 and 2 miles and 2 ¼ and 3 miles.
Now, once you set in a speed, you have to go
all the way back to the tower to get your official
time sheet, then rush it to the pit area to register your time within
one hour of your setting the time. Now, once this is done, they had
to let them impound the bike overnight. They cannot touch it, motor
THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE 30
or anything. The track put a sealed
cable on their heads, so they can’t do
a thing there either. Basically, they
have to go wait til morning to ride
again. Once morning comes, they
have to meet or exceed the same
speed they registered the day before
in order for it to become an official
record. The great news here is that
Sam set the speed in the first day at
158.766 mph. The second day he hit
162.60. The lower speed of 158.766
is the speed that was set to record. Sam said he wished he would have waited to
set the first time, but he was so anxious to simply get a record, that he went ahead
and set it in at that as a starting point.
As for the 200 mph record, Sam feels that will be another day. He said the most
trouble they had with the bike was getting and maintaining traction on the salt. As
you could imagine, the salt track is very slick. He told me at one point the bike got
so squirrelly due to the slick surface, he wasn’t sure he was going to make it to the
end of the track in one piece. They then took as much weight off of the bike as they
could, including its ice water for cooling the motor. Although they had not set the
200 mph record in the week they were there, they felt that they learned a lot about
their next once a year opportunity at Bonneville. At the time of this publication, they
were headed to the Texas Flying Mile, Goliard TX to see what she’d do on a solid
paved track. I hope we get to report next month that they broke a 200 mph bagger
record there.

In The Day
I recently took a class at a conference on the parking
of vehicles on highways and roadways during an emer-
gency situation. It was extremely informative, these types
of classes usually are. During one of the many videos that
we viewed during the class, I noticed that there was a
motorcycle police officer that was working an accident on
a busy suburban boulevard, along with other emergency
vehicles on the scene. Many emergency vehicles are
the target of secondary collisions at the original accident
