CHAPTER1

The problem and its Background

INTRODUCTION

What are the benefits of having an android based attendance system

(ABAS)? Can ABAS solve the problem in terms of taking of daily attendance of

the students?

The traditional attendance system needs student’s to physically sign the

attendance sheet each time for the attendance of each class. This is

unnecessarily timeconsuming to notice and mark student's name on the

attendance sheet. Using android phones they can monitor their performanceas

well as in server and can check percentage and also can print as hard copy.

The researchers would like to know how important is having an android

based class attendance monitoring. The main objective of this research is to know

the perception of the teachers of Arellano University Pasig about if this kind of

modern attendance system would be implemented to Arellano University Pasig

The researchers respondents are selected senior high school teachers in

Arellano University Pasig. Why SHS teachers? Because we want to get their

perceptions in having of Android Based Attendance System(ABAS) in AU Pasig.

Android based class attendance monitoring is a software for daily

student’s attendance in school, institutes and collages; it facilitates the

1|Page
information of a student in a particular class, this kind of android based class

attendance monitoring is very helpful to our teachers to evaluate attendance

eligibility of criteria of a student, this android based class attendance monitoring

is not only for students but also for employees.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The theory of perception by Thomas Reid’s book at chapter (p.41)

intentional awareness. Reid characterizes the type of conceptual awareness of

interest to his theory of perception as a special sub species of conception, what

he calls apprehension. Apprehension is responsible for the presentation of mind

independent objects directly to the mind. Reid describes the conceptual state that

apprehension produces as an “immanent act of mind”. This is an intentional state

because it necessarily takes objects. Apprehensions thus differ from other mental

states, such as moods, which are not intentional. Chapter (p.109) visual

perception in this chapter analyzes Reid’s theory of visual perception. Vision had

seemed to Reid’s predecessors obviously to be indirect. He argues that the

presence of visible figure does not thwart his attempt to show that even visual

perception can provide us direct access to features to the world. Chapter (p.211)

perceptual learning. Reid’s moves beyond appeal to suggestion though his

sophisticated analysis of what he calls “original” and “acquired” perception. This

chapter focuses in these terms, which he uses to conduct his discussion of the

role of cognition in perception. These terms refer to stages that the process of

constructing full-bodied perceptual content from rudimentary metal states. With

2|Page
and unfamiliar object the process of perceptual learning by slinging it out

demonstratively, and eventually arrive at a complex perceptual belief.

Many academic institutions are beginning toupdate their standards by

issuing students withidentification cards that are equipped withbarcodes, ID

chips, radio frequency identification(RFID) tags, and so on (Andrew, 2011).

Thisdecision opens up a window to implementbarcode identification systems in

classrooms as a management tool to solve many of the problemsfacedby

lecturers and the institutions’management in classroom attendancemanagement.

Due to the inefficiency of traditionalmethods of attendance record keeping, a

moresecure and accurate barcode technology modelis needed to be formulated

and implemented

REVIEW AND RELATED LITERATURE

Local Literature

According to Z. Camadain her article “Androidbased Attendance

Management System” (2015) she said most lecturers in universities are

found still using the conventional methods of taking students’ attendance in

addition to the time-consuming issue, such method is also at higher risk of

having students cheating about their attendance

This Article is appropriate to the present study to help the Senior

High School teachers prevent students cheating on their own attendance at

school for some students bribe their classmates to say that they are present even

though they aren’t.

According J. Manancio in her article “Android Attendance” (2015)

He said that an adopted and implement an android recognition

based attendance system to record and management students’ attendance

and sent E-mail address in MATLAB programming environment

This article is relevant to the present study because it indicates to

process could help to increase the desire attending on-time and raising

the education level

7|Page
According to J. Mandalas in her article “Attendance in no Time” (2012)

Therefore, it is a critical subject to tracking and manages student's attendance in

school, college, and university environment.

This study was related to the recent study because of their huge

relevance it also helped to urge students to attend on time, amend the efficiency

of the learning, increase learning grade, and finally boosting and improving the

education level

The study aimed to create an Android-based system that manages the

use of appliances in a typical room of a student in a boarding house with regard

to switching and control via an Android tablet. The system is composed of two

Android tablets – one specifically for the GSM and the other for Bluetooth, an

Android application that displays the outlets, and a main control panel that

houses the microcontroller and the Bluetooth module.

FOREIGN STUDIES

Study shows that android being a dominant gadgets in lots of country

worldwide, has a positive impact in lot of aspect like in attendance, vocabulary,

and in critical thinking because android is more in useful in the world(Blanskat,

Blamire, kefala,2016)

Manyteachers now a day are using android to support traditional learning

methods, for example, information retrieval, attendance in which students are

‘passive learners of knowledge and instead of ‘active producers able to take part

in the learning process., (Galea 2015)

Android is open a wide range and new communication method that greatly

helped the world when it comes in sending and receiving information thru

internet, android also helping the world to buy and use communication tools in a

lesser price, (Andy Walton, 2016).

MirzodalerMuhsinzoda(2015) stated that The main purpose of android are

to provide the right information to the right people at the right time. It is used to

track, store, manipulate and distribute the information from gathered data to

appropriate persons when necessary.

Foreign Literature

According to N Saparkhojayev, E Shakhov and Y Mailybayev of Journal

of Physics: Conference Series.(2015)

Android is designed for low-power devices that run on battery power at full

capacity, using all of its services, such as cameras, lights, GPS navigation, Wi-Fi,

etc. In Kazakhstani universities, the process of checking students' attendance is

one of the important issues, because final grade evaluation of students is based

on their total number of appearances and their grades during the whole

semester. This raises the question of having some tool to control students'

attendance.

Attendance is a vital part of daily routine in educational institutes, offices

and many other organizations. In schools and colleges this attendance marking

is done manually but with advent of new technologies like smart

phones, ipad, tablets, palmtops the world is just a click away. Today, we need not

use pen and paper based attendance registers instead we can use very easy

and efficient methods like taking e-attendance.
