PART - B (5 x 12 = 60)
Answer ALL the Questions

11. Explain the effect of operating variables on the performance of an

engine.
(or)
12. Explain in detail the selection of vehicle specifications.

13. Explain in detail tractive effort and its variation with vehicle
speed.
(or)
14. The co- efficient of rolling resistance for a truck weighing
62300N is 0.018 and the co-efficient of air resistance is 0.0276
in the formula R= KW+ KaAV2,N. The transmission efficiency in
top gear of 6:1 is 90% and that in the second gear of 14:1 is 80%.
The frontal area is 6m2. If the truck has to have a maximum speed
of 88 Km/hr in top gear calculate the engine BP required, the
engine speed if the driving wheels have an effective radius of
0.4062m and the maximum grade the truck can negotiate at the
above engine speed in second gear.

15. Plot the total resistance, driving force curve for a vehicle having
the following data.
Vehicle weight= 2 tonnes
Frontal area of the vehicle= 1.5m2
Aerodynamic co-efficient= 0.0045
Vehicle speed= 0 to 140 km/hr.
(or)
16. For a typical motor car, the road resistance is given by 23N/
1000N, the air resistance by the expression 0.0827V 2,
transmission efficiency 88% in top speed; car weighs 19934N
when fully loaded. Calculate the engine BP required for a road
speed of 144Km/hr, the acceleration in m/s2 at 48 Km/hr
assuming the torque at 48 Km/hr in the top gear 25% more than
at 144Km/hr.

17. A 4-S diesel engine has the following data Brake power= 7KW;
Speed= 1500rpm; I.M.E.P= 0.45 N/mm2; mechanical efficiency=
80%. Determine the bore dia and the stroke length.
(or)
18. Discuss the procedure to calculate the bore and stroke of an
engine.

19. Sketch a section through sliding type gearbox with a 4-forward

and 1-reverse speed and explain clearly how the difference speed
ratios will be obtained in the following cases:
Gear ratio on top gear = 1:1
Gear ratio on third gear = 1.38:1
Gear ratio on second gear = 2.24:1
Gear ratio on first gear = 3.8:1
Gear ratio on reverse gear = 3.8:1
Assume countershaft or layout shaft speed is half that of the
engine speed and the smallest gear is not to have less than
15teeth.
(or)
20. The brake power of a vehicle is 94.2 KW at 3300 rpm. The total
tractive resistance on low gear including gradient resistance is
5395.5 N and that in the top gear is 1697 N. The diameter of the
wheels is 0.9144m and the efficiency of transmission is 75% on
low gear and 85% on top gear. Calculate the gear ratio for a three
speed gear box.
