PART - B (5 x 12 = 60)
Answer ALL the Questions

11. Explain the method of selecting vehicle specifications and write

the types of cylinder arrangement and their significance.
(or)
12. Explain in detail the forced circulation water cooling system with
neat sketch.

13. The co-efficient of rolling resistance for a truck weighing

62293.5 N is 0.018 and the co-efficient of air resistance is 0.0276
in the formula R = KW+KaAV2, N, where A is m2 of frontal area
and V the speed in km/h. The transmission efficiency in top gear
of 6.2:1 is 90% and that in the second gear of 15:1 is 18%. The
frontal area is 5.574 m2. If the truck has to have a maximum
speed of 88 km/h in top gear, calculate: (a) the engine BP
required (b) the engine speed if the driving wheels have an
effective diameter of 0.8125 m (c) the maximum grade the truck
can negotiate at the above engine speed in second gear (d) the
maximum draw bar pull available on level at the above engine
speed in second gear.
(or)
14. Draw the acceleration and gradability curves in different gears of
a truck based on its specifications.

15. A motor car weighing 13341.6 N and has an engine developing

40.5 kW at 4000 rpm. The transmission system has an efficiency
of 90% in top gear and 85% in second gear. The top gear ratio is
1:1 and the second gear ratio is 1.64:1, when running on level
with wide open throttle, the car reaches 112 km/h at 4000 rpm
and at the same engine speed in second it will just climb a hill of
1 in 12. If the resistance to motion on level road is given by the
formula R = A + BV2, wher R is in N and V in km/h. Calculate
the maximum speed with which the car can climb a grade of 1 in
20 in top gear. What is corresponding engine speed? Assume that
engine power is proportional to speed in the above range.
(or)
16. Discuss in detail the road speed Vs power available at wheels and
Road speed Vs Tractive effort with curves.

17. A four cylinder petrol engine has an output of 51.5 kW at 2000

rpm. A Morse test was carried out and the brake torque readings
were 176.3, 169.5, 166.8 and 173.6 Nm respectively. For normal
running at this speed specific fuel consumption is 0.37 kg/bkWh.
The LHV of the fuel is 43900 kJ/kg. Calculate the mechanical
efficiency and brake thermal efficiency of the engine.
(or)
18. The cylinder of four stroke diesel engine has the following
specifications: Brake power = 3.75 kW, speed = 1000 rpm,
indicated mean effective power = 0.35 MPa, Mechanical
efficiency = 80%. Determine the bore and length of the cylinder
liner.

19. A four speed gear box is to be constructed for providing the ratios
of 1.0, 1.46, 2.28 and 3.93 to 1 as nearly as possible. The
diametral pitch of each gear is 3.25 mm and the smallest pinion is
to have a least 15 teeth. Determine the suitable number of teeth of
the different gears. What is then the distance between the main
and lay shaft.
(or)
20. Explain the design of 4+1 synchromesh gear box. Assume the
suitable data and draw the power flow diagram to each gear.
