Chapter 6: Independent Learning

Application 1:
Vocabulary Cards (p. 141-142)
Students are given cards to fill out with the content and focus of the terms selected.
Application to your work/learning:
In my lesson plan, I will have my students complete a Learning Log with the list of vocabulary
cards. Select students will be given an opportunity to write the vocabulary words with the
definitions to be placed on the bulletin board.

Application 2:
Word Games (p.150-151)
Students will play games to rehearse and practice their vocabulary words
Application to your work/learning:
To increase fluency and retention, I will have the students play spelling games with each
other to also increase oral collaboration.
Application 3:
Power Writing (p. 157-158)
To increase writing fluency, students are given an opportunity to engage in timed writing
Application to your work/learning:
As part of their exercise about California Missions, they will write a narrative about a day in a
California Mission. Students will build their oral fluency as they discuss with their partners
and writing fluency as they write their own creative stories.
