DESIGN OF A 2-DIMENSIONAL GEOMETRY OF SOLID FLYWHEEL FOR OPTIMAL KINETIC ENERGY

STORAGE
Introduction

The flywheel is a solid disk (see Figure 1) with a constant angular velocity, , rotating around z axis. A section of this model
is illustrated via Figure 2. The problem has axisymmetric conditions such that all variables do not change with circumferential
direction. The problem can be treated as 2-D one. Therefore the model symmetry is further simplified to become a 2-D problem
with r and z coordinates (see Figure 3). The shape of flywheel disk is represented by cubic spline passing through set of key-
points (see Figure 4).

Figure 3 Figure 4
The locations of key-points with the associated dimensions are shown in Figure 4.

Model

Model the flywheel geometry (choose Ro, h1, h2, h3 and h4) such that axisymmetric condition applies. Use ANSYS to find the
maximum Von-Mises stress and therefore the kinetic energy capacity. The mass of flywheel is fixed as 20 Kg,

Results

Apply your expertise in FEA to analyze the relation between the flywheel geometry (Ro, h1, h2, h3 and h4) and allowable kinetic
rotational energy..
