In its broadest sense, teaching is a process that facilitates learning. Teaching is the specialized
application of knowledge, skills and attributes designed to provide unique service to meet the
educational needs of the individual and of society. The choice of learning activities whereby the goals of
education are realized in the school is the responsibility of the teaching profession.
In addition to providing students with learning opportunities to meet curriculum outcomes, teaching
emphasizes the development of values and guides students in their social relationships. Teachers
employ practices that develop positive self-concept in students. Although the work of teachers typically
takes place in a classroom setting, the direct interaction between teacher and student is the single most
important element in teaching.

potentialities to the fullest, to develop character and desirable social and human values to
function as responsible citizens; and,
An active member of the group of persons who make conscious effort to contribute towards
the process of renewal of school curriculum to maintain its relevance to the changing
societal needs and personal needs of learners, keeping in view the experiences gained in
the past and the concerns and imperatives that have emerged in the light of changing
national development goals and educational priorities.

and sensitive to the social contexts of education, the various disparities in the background

reflects the attitude, behavior and personality of the learner.

home tasks to the students. It has to be responsible for the assimilation of what is taught
to the students. The manner of teaching should be pleasant enough to make the students
grasp whatever they are taught.
