9.5. Embankment Zone 2 1. Submit work request
2. Before and during compaction, the material
in each layer of Zones 2 and 3 shall be
thoroughly wetted and the moisture content
shall be uniform throughout the layer
3. Provide the necessary plant for processing
the filters
4. Water shall be applied as required by
spraying on the dam embankment. Each
layer of Zone 2 material shall be compacted
concurrently with the adjacent layer of Zone
3 material
5. Each layer of Zone 2 material shall be
compacted by 1 pass of a vibrating roller
conforming to the requirements for vibrating
rollers for rock-fill
STANDARD DESIGN
1. The filters shall consist of a non-plastic
mixture of rock fragments in which the
individual particles are hard and durable,
free from clay, silt and organic material
2. Filter materials for embankment zone 2 shall
test the materials in accordance with ASTM
C535-65 and ASTM C88-63. The material
may be rejected if:
a. At 500 revolution the loss, using grading A
in the Los Angeles abrasion test, exceeds
45% by mass;
b. When subjected to 5 cycles of the sodium
sulphate test for soundness the weighted
loss by mass is more than 14%.
3. The representative tests shall be performed
as at least 1 (one) test per 500m3 by the
Contractor
4. Before compaction, filter material shall be
placed and spread to an approximately
horizontal surface in such a way as to
prevent segregation of particles or the
formation of large voids.
5. The thickness of Zone 2 and Zone 3 layer
shall be not more than 300 mm and 600 mm
respectively after require compaction
