Problem 1 (3 points) 

Consider the following version of the “21 coins” two‐player game from class. On each turn, each player 
may remove one, two, or three coins. Suppose the players have reached a point where it is Red’s turn 
and there are just five coins left. 

(a) Draw the game tree for the game starting with five coins. 
(b) Find all of the rollback equilibria for this five‐coin game. 
(c) Would you say this five‐coin game has a first‐move advantage or a second‐move advantage? 

Problem 2 (7 points) 

Lesser Antilles Lines: The Island of San Huberto 

In your HBS case packet, you will find the case “Lesser Antilles Lines – The Island of San Huberto” and 
the associated Excel spreadsheet. Read the case carefully, then answer the following questions. 

1. With reference to the game depicted in the matrix at the end of the case, 
a. Does either of the firms have a dominant strategy? 
b. Are there any dominated strategies in the game?  
c. Does the game have a Nash equilibrium (or multiple Nash equilibria)? 
d. What is the “best” outcome for the industry as a whole? [Hint: To answer this question, 
think about what LAL and KL would agree on if they could write a legally binding contract. 
Consider both the case in which the contract can specify only prices and the case in which 
the contract can specify prices as well as monetary transfers between the firms.] 
e. If LAL could somehow irreversibly commit to a price before KL decides on its price, would 
LAL do so? And if so, to what price would it commit? (Assume that KL can observe the price 
to which LAL has committed before KL sets its own price.) 
f. If LAL could somehow irreversibly commit that it would always charge the same as KL, would 
LAL do so? Why or why not? (Assume that KL can observe LAL’s commitment, for instance, 
because LAL advertises its new policy to potential customers.) 
 
2. Given the information in the case, what would you recommend that LAL do? Discuss. (1 page 
maximum)
