1. (a) Calculate the value of

(i) (1.111 − 0.009)2 ÷ 0.937 to 3 significant figures (3 marks)

(ii) Write your answer from part (i) above to 1 decimal place. (1 mark)

(iii) Write your answer to the nearest whole number. (1 mark)

(b) Calculate the EXACT value of

2. (a) Solve the following pair of simultaneous equations (4 marks)

2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 4
3𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 13

(b) Factorize the following expressions


(i) 𝑥 2 − 144 (2 marks)

(ii) 𝑎2 𝑏 + 𝑎𝑏 2 (2 marks)

(iii) 3𝑥𝑟 + 3𝑥𝑠 − 𝑦𝑟 − 𝑦𝑠 (2 marks)


3. (a) Mary paid $𝑦 for a phone. She gave the clerk $1000 and received $925 in change.

(i) Write an equation for the information above. (1 mark)

(ii) Use this equation to find the cost of the phone. (1 mark)

(b) Simplify the following expressions:


(i) (𝑥 − 3)(𝑥 + 4) (2 marks)

(ii) 3𝑥 2 𝑦 4 × 2𝑥𝑦 2 (2 marks)

4. (a) If 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 − 3, find

(i) 𝑓(0) (1 mark)

(iii) 𝑓(−1) (1 mark)

(b) Complete the table below for the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 − 3 (3 marks)

(c) On graph paper, using 1 cm to represent 1 unit on the y-axis and 2 cm to represent

5. (a) A computer system is offered on hire purchase terms for $350 000. A down
payment of 25% of the cost is required to be paid. The balance is to be paid in 24
monthly instalments.

(i) Calculate the amount to be paid as down payment. (2 marks)

(ii) Calculate the outstanding amount to be paid. (1 mark)

(iii) Calculate the monthly instalment to be paid. (2 marks)

(b) Find the simple interest on $860 for 4 years at a rate of 5% per annum.
(2 marks)

(c) A shirt was bought for $3500 and sold for $3800. Calculate the percentage profit.
(3 marks)
6. (a) The figure below shows the shape and measurements of a playground.

(i) Find the perimeter of the playground. (2 marks)

(ii) Calculate the area of the playground in meter squares. (2 marks)

(b) The cost of fencing the playground is $600 per meter. Calculate the cost of fencing
the entire playground. (3 marks)

(c) If the play area is to be tiled, and EACH tile covers an area of 8 m2, how many tiles
will be needed? (3 marks)
