Reading Level: 8th Grade 2/13/19 Spring 2019 8th Grade World History Using Inferential Skills and Analyzing Documents Learning Intention: Be able to connect appeasement to the rise of dictators in the interwar period Success Criteria: I can explain how appeasement policies led to the rise of dictators in the interwar period Rationale: This Unit is about the period in between World War I and World War II and how and why dictators came to power to lead to WWII. Materials: Worksheet, various images and tape Differentiation: For any pictures that did not print well we will project them on the board instead. I can also extend the amount of time at each picture to allow for longer periods for students who may need more time to analyze them. Activities: Instructor: First students have 10 minutes to finish up their trading cards from yesterday and turn them in Then I will pass out the worksheet and explain the activity. Around the room are various images. They will spread out and go from image to image in order to answer the questions on the worksheet and eventually use the images to answer the essential question, which is how did appeasement play a role in the rise of dictators leading up to World War II? We will define appeasement together as a class first so that they have a basis of what they are looking to define within the images After we work together as a class I will spread them out among the images and then rotate them every few minutes or so and then give them time to go back to any they feel they need more time with They can talk and work together when they are working at each station but once it’s time to answer the final question they must work individually. Students: Finish their trading cards and turn them in. Then participate in class discussion regarding appeasement Then work through the stations and the worksheet After they finish they need to turn in their worksheet WICOR: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration and Reading are all present in this lesson Evaluation/Assessment: The lesson will be successful if the students participate in the activity and complete all of the questions by the end of the period. Their answers to the short answer question at the end utilizing the images is an assessment of their understanding of appeasement and its role in the rise of dictators. Closing Activity: Give the students time to turn in their worksheets allow them to finish for homework if necessary and then pack up to go to their next class.
