DISCUSSION

We have chosen a place which is located at Uitm Shah Alam, Selangor (near dataran
cendikiawan) to conduct traffic noise study. The data of the traffic noise was taken during
daytime, from 12.40 pm. to 1.10 p.m. A maximum reading was taken for every 30 seconds.
The data shows that the range of noise level, in unit called decibels (dB) is from 70.0 dB to
100.0 dB. The maximum noise level during 30 minutes of our test is 92.5 dB.

From the data that have we recorded, we categorized the noise level value are in
normal because the recorded data is in 30 -130 dB range. Later, we plotted a graph from the
recorded data in order to get a noise level trend. To determine the traffic noise level at L10, we
made a cumulative frequency graph. L10 is refer to the noise level which is exceed by 10% of
the specified time. Based on the graph, the L10 value for the selected area is 82.5 dB. Any
noise that exceed from this value may disturbs or irritates our social well-being. But the actual
result shows, there are few noise level value that has been recorded exceed the acceptable
noise level. L10 is suitable to measure noise level in roadway.

We assumed that the location has medium traffic because during the test is conducted,
most people are still working and only a few people using the road. The traffic will increase at
4.30 p.m. - 5.00 p.m. as most of people returning home from their work and classes. Thus,
when the traffic start to gain, they might contribute more noise.

Basically, traffic noise consists the noise that came from vehicular engine and the noise
from the tires that made a contact with the pavement of the road. Nowadays, traffic noise
significantly contributes to the environment’s noise source. If the noise level is too high or
exceed the normal range, it can be classified as noise pollution and it will make an impact in
our society and environment.

As the data logging sound level meter is very sensitive to its surrounding, there might be
some error while conducting the test. The sound of voice by people that passing through
also got caught up by the tool thus will affect the readings, this will result an inaccurate
reading.
