PERSONAL SOLID WASTE INVENTORY

OBJECTIVE: Determine the amount of solid waste generated from daily activities

MATERIAL: personal solid wastes

PROCEDURE:
1. For the next seven days, record all the materials you use every day. Materials recorded should include
all solid waste as well as any items that may be recycled or reused in some way. Examples of items to
be recorded should include paper, plastic bags, food wrappers, beverage containers, product packaging
(shampoo bottles, deodorant containers, toothpaste tubes), newspapers, aluminum foil, cardboard boxes,
paperboard roll from toilet paper, and so on.
2. Keep a running inventory of your solid wastes throughout the week, with a final tally of the number of
items in each major category (e.g. paper, plastic, aluminum, Styrofoam, mixed metals, glass, etc.)
tabulated at the end of this time period.
3. Then, weigh your waste materials by category to calculate a total mass of all your materials for the
week. Include an inventory of organic waste generated in the preparation of your meals at home.
Weigh and divide it by the number of persons in your household.
4. Calculate the mass of your annual solid waste production based on this seven days’ period.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. Based on the tallied results, which type of solid waste do you produce most?
The type of solid waste I produced most is the organic waste/foodwaste.

2. Why do you think you produce so much of this type of waste?

I usually produce the most waste of food because I dont usually finish my food, sometimes Im full
already the tendency is the food would be put into waste

3. Give concrete ways that will help you minimize the solid waste you generate.
1. TAKE YOUR OWN BAG OR BASKET TO THE GROCERY AND MARKET.
2, DO NOT ACCEPT BAGS FOR YOUR PURCHASES IN STORES UNLESS YOU REALLY NEED
THEM (E.G. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PLACE A BAG OF BREAD IN ANOTHER BAG).
3.CHOOSE PRODUCTS WRAPPED IN THE LEAST UNNECESSARY PACKAGING.
4. BUY EVERYTHING YOU CAN IN BULK (LARGE ECONOMY SIZES) RATHER THAN
SMALL PACKAGES THAT USE MUCH MORE WASTEFUL PACKAGING.
5. TRY USING CONCENTRATED PRODUCTS (E.G. SOAP) WHICH NEED LESS PACKAGING.
6. BUY VEGETABLES LOOSE RATHER THAN IN PLASTIC BAGS.
7. COMPOST VEGETABLE SCRAPS AND GARDEN WASTE. THIS CAN ACCOUNT FOR UP TO
THREE-QUARTERS OF THE WASTE YOU PRODUCE.
8. DON'T WASTE FOOD AND STORE LEFTOVERS IN A REUSABLE CONTAINER.
9. GIVE YOUR FOOD SCRAPS TO ANIMALS.
10. SELL OR DONATE THINGS YOU DON'T WANT INSTEAD OF THROWING THEM OUT
(E.G. CLOTHES, BOOKS CAN BE SOLD AT GARAGE SALES OR HANDED DOWN TO YOUNGER
ONES).
4. Suggest ways on how the household, school, and community can reduce their solid waste.
REDUCE
• Borrow, rent or share things you don't use often (e.g. tools).
• Use cloth napkins, sponges and dishcloths instead of paper towels and napkins.
• Do not take more than you need to use. For example, don't take packets of ketchup,
napkins, or utensils from restaurants unless you need them.
• Use low-energy fluorescent bulbs that last longer than the regular incandescent
bulbs.
• If you mow your lawn or trim plants, let the trimmings remain on the soil to
decompose and release important nutrients for the plants to use or use them in a
compost bin.

CONCLUSION:

I THINK THAT THE NSTP CLASS ABOUT PROPER WASTE MANAGEMENT MADE ME RETHINK
MY ACTIONS AND GAVE ME NEW INFORMATION ON HOW I CAN HELP MINIMIZE POLLUTION
IN THE ENVIRONMENT. I REALIZED THAT I NEED TO BE MORE CAUTIOUS IN HANDLING
WASTE BECAUSE PUTTING IT ANYWHERE WILL MAKE OUR PROBLEMS REGARDING WASTE
WORSE. IT IS ALSO GOOD TO REMEMBER THAT OUR COLLECTIVE ACTION IS THE KEY TO
EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE PROPER SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.

DOING SMALL THINGS LIKE PUTTING OUR TRASH IN A GARBAGE CAN HELP A LOT TO SAVE
THIS PLANET FOR THE FUTURE GENERATIONS. LET US ALL BE THE RESPONSIBLE STEWARDS
OF THIS BEAUTIFUL PLANET SO THAT OUR CHILDREN AND THEIR CHILDREN’S CHILDREN
CAN ALSO APPRECIATE AND EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY OF OUR ENVIRONMENT.
