Heating homes and hot water efficiently, cost effectively and environmentally
friendly is high on everyone’s agenda in the current climate. Choosing the right
products is a good start but its also about the way we use the energy we
generate and more importantly, the way we retain it. Here we offer our advice
on making the right choices for optimum energy efficiency across the home.

Energy Efficiency Advice/Tips

Install energy efficiency appliances and products throughout the home
• Home owners will save money on fuel bills, when replacing older boilers with
a new high efficiency condensing appliance as new boilers adjust automatically
to ensure optimum efficiency from the energy being used.
• Installing energy efficient light bulbs will also aid energy efficiency.

Choose the right type of boiler for the size of property

• For larger homes, open vent or system boilers combined with storage cylinders
provide one of the most cost effective ways to a larger amount of domestic hot
water. However Combi boilers provide a highly efficient and effective solution for
smaller households as they only heat water on demand. Therefore there is no
wasted energy heating excess water.

Think about how you use your energy

• A correctly sized system is always important for energy efficiency. A system
should be able to suit the needs of a household without the need for regular
overrides of the programmed timings.
• Taking showers instead of baths utilises 40% less water. Most modern showers
heat water on requirement saving energy and cost.
• Wash clothing in full loads rather than half loads.

Insulate to preserve heat

• Small things like lagging pipes, adding additional loft insulation, ensuring your
cylinder is insulated, adding cavity wall insulation, installing double glazed
windows and doors, even closing curtains and tucking them behind radiators
(where possible) so the heat is convected into the room (rather than towards
a cold window) all benefits a homes energy efficiency.

Don’t waste energy – small things can add up to big savings!

• Thermostatic valves on radiators are another good way to save energy as they allow
for individual rooms to be temperature controlled and therefore can reduce heating
bill by saving unnecessary heating of rooms which are occupied less often.
• Only boil the water you need.
• Don’t leave appliances switched on standby.
• Cook with lids on saucepan’s and match the size of pan used to the cooker ring size.
• Turn off lights when you leave a room.

Grants to enable the upgrade of a household may also be available (subject to criteria) via
