Notes On Parent Conferences
 Grade 7 - 25 february,2015
Parents and students gathered in the auditorium to discuss matters of
importance of students’ performance and behaviours at school. Parents
especially of grades 7 A and B were concerned with the academic
performance of their children due to the classes being pre-transitional.
The teachers encouraged parents to aid in the academic development of
their children as it is critical that they acquire the marks set to be
promoted to form two. The parents of the three (3) form one classes
namely Forms 1 C, D and E were asked to encourage their children to
submit assignments on time and complete all given assessments.

 Grade 8 - March 3,2015

Parents and teachers gathered in a large classroom to discuss students’
performance and behaviour for the past and previous term. Parents
were eager to know about their children behave and how well they are
performing in their school works and assessments. The mentee was
able to speak to important parents about the indiscipline behaviour of
their children and the share the concern of some children not
submitting or completing course work causing them to perform poorly
and possibly failing at the end of the term.

 Special meeting with parents of Grades 7 A and B- May 7,2015

A special meeting was held with the parents of Grades 7 A and B
concerning extra lessons to be provided after school to address the
reading problems displayed by the students of these two classes.
However due to the poor turnout of parents a date and time is yet to be
decided to start the classes. The mentee was disappointed in the lack of
interested demonstrated by the parents because letters were sent out to
each parent and it cost time and money to have them prepared and
distributed in a timely manner.

During the course of late September to early November Hope secondary
school prepared, practised and executed all activities pertaining to this
grand annual event. The enthusiasm of students could be felt leading up
to the events and participation by all was evident. The first meeting was
held on the 5th of September, 2014 at 13:45 hrs. in the auditorium. The
mentee was placed in B house with fellow colleagues, namely Sir. Deoraj
Nauth, Ms Halcyone Harris, Ms Shaundelle John, Sir. Garfiled Douglas,

students were allowed to rest and picnic while being educated about the
sea creatures, waves and soil erosion.

 Culture day
On the 27 th February Hope Secondary had its Annual Culture Day. It
was a grand success. The mentee being a form teacher from level one,
had to depict the East Indian culture. The mentee had a rewarding and
fulfilling experience learning about the different cultures; sampling
their food and viewing their arts and craft. During the morning session,
all the different cultures had booths in which they displayed items
belonging to their respective cultures. This was judged as part of a
competition for the best display booth. In the afternoon there was a
cultural concert where students from each cultural group performed
dances, songs, skits etc. portraying their respective culture. This event
was enlightening to the mentee and a learning experience also.

 Being a form teacher

The mentee was the form teacher for Grade seven 7 A, a class that was
previously a transition class and one of first transition classes
introduced at Hope Secondary School. This class is comprised of 28

September to July 2014 the mentee has had a lot challenges dealing with
the indiscipline behaviour of some of the students .By the end of the first
term the mentee got to understand most of the students and find out
possible reasons for their delinquent behaviour. The mentee has had a
chance to counsel, advise and form relationships among students of her
class. Students were encouraged to display good morals and reminded

CONCLUSION
The induction year programme was both challenging and rewarding for the
mentee. The mentee however is privileged that she was given the opportunity
to complete this programme and at the same time develop herself as a
teacher. She (the mentee) is therefore looking forward to continue the good
work she stated during the induction year period and continue her self-
development on the job.
