Asst. Secretary John Ashkar along with his House Committee are proactive on addressing many issues with our building.
To name a few, the back entrance stairs iron railing was replaced, Milan is working on patching and
William Asmar painting specific sections which include the walls and ceiling, and Frankie has replaced many traditional
Treasurer bulbs with LEDs for a brighter and cleaner look.
Mark Chory Lou Najamy continues to review future members and has done a great job on the process.
Asst. Treasurer I would also like to thank both Lou Najamy, Lou Scalzo and Frankie Schlemer for our New and Larger

were raised to purchase it.

Thoughts to Live By:

“A frontal attack on ignorance is bound to fail because the masses are always ready to defend their most precious
possession – their ignorance.” Hendrik Willem van Loon, Dutch-American journalist and lecturer (1882-1944).
“We do not talk – we bludgeon one another with facts and theories gleaned from cursory readings of newspapers,
magazines and digests.” Henry Miller, American author (1891-1980)

A Little Humor:
“If you want to inspire confidence, give plenty of statistics – it does not matter that they should be accurate, or even
intelligible, so long as there is enough of them.” Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), English author
(born1832, died 1898).
“Nothing is really real unless it happens on television.” Daniel J. Boorstin, educator and Librarian of Congress
(1914-2004).
Member News:
It is with great pleasure that we, Louie Scalzo, Frankie Schlemmer, and Lou Najamy are pleased to announce the
Pasta Night proceeds were used to purchase a new larger stove for our downstairs kitchen. It is through the
continued participation of several members, family and friends that we are able to save up enough money to
purchase not only flatware, pots, pans, and recently a six burner large oven stove. It was installed by your Pasta
guys with the help of Milan David. Please try to support Pasta Night by coming down and enjoying a great meal and
camaraderie. All moneys collected have been and will be used to upgrade our club’s kitchens without costing the
Club’s Treasury any money. Thanks again to all those who participate in Pasta Night..
This year Lebanon Day we will honor U.S. Veterans that served in Lebanon during the 1980’s. Our own club
member Commissioner of Connecticut Department of Veteran Affairs Thomas J. Saadi along with club member and
Lebanon Veteran Peter DeLucia are working with the Connecticut Veterans group to identify those vets who served
in Lebanon. They will be honored on Danbury’s Lebanon Day this year. More information to follow.
Health and Welfare:
Please keep in your prayers our ill members and/or their family members and wishing them speedy recovery
specially Elie Karam, Morey Samaha and Ernie Bourjaili. Please notify Pres. Mike Caravakis, whenever a member
falls seriously ill by sending an email to caravakis@aol.com.

We offer our sincere sympathy, condolences and prayers to the families on the passing
of our fellow Member Ed Jowdy Sr, Betty Lubus, Hani Assal brother of Adel Assal,
Theresa Basher (Shakro), Sister and Sister in Law of Phil Shakro and Norman Basher
respectively. May they all rest in eternal peace.

Ladies Auxiliary News by President Betty Najm

On behalf of the ladies Auxiliary, I would like to extend our condolences on the passing of Betty Lubus of
Danbury. She was an Honorable member of the Ladies Auxiliary and lifetime member of At. Anthony’s Church.
She was named Woman of the Year in the 2013 Person of the Year Award dinner. May she rest in peace.
It looks like Spring has sprung! I hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather.
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, April 9 at 6:30 pm. We will be ordering pizza and salad for dinner! Hope to see
everyone there. We have many exciting events coming up!
Thank you to Prof. El Eid for giving us a lecture on the history of Lebanon. It was a very informative
lecture. Thank you to everyone that attended. We appreciated all the food and desserts that were brought
to share. The St. Patrick’s Day parade was happening right outside our windows!
Thank you to Ghassan Najm for a very successful Lebanese & English Karaoke night. There were so many talented
singers. Lorraine and Beth McGuire are amazing and Ken, a new friend to the club, was so theatrical and
mesmerizing as they sang in English! The talented Ladies from Waterbury and Ghassan sang in Arabic! Our Chef
Elie Taweh served delicious food! His son, Mike was our DJ! It was a memorable night.
The Teacher Exchange dinner will be on Tues., April 23. Tickets are still available. Come meet the teachers from
Lebanon and the US to learn about their experiences. Three teachers will be visiting us from Lebanon, two from the
International College and one from Cadmus College where Abouna Jean is the principal. We are sending two
teachers from the United States
Thanks to Lou Najamy and Lou Scalzo for their delicious lasagna and spaghetti with meatballs!
