WOMEN’S FASHION

 Two distinctive directions – fluid

– close to the body dresses

 Tendency towards casual dressing and pieces that worked for multiple occasions
 Fashion was identified as personal choice rather than something dictated by
designers.

 Soft, fluid relatively slim silhouette were created including halter, T-shirt, softly
bloused style

 Trousers tended to be wide legged in the first half of decade, by the later 70s tapered
pants began to be shown and narrow trousers began to return to fashion by the end of the
decade.

 By the late seventies the popular fashion was straight, cigarette cut jeans.

 The first half of the 1970s was the time of platform shoes, ranging from a half inch in
front with large, chunky heels, to extremes of height.

MEN’S CLOTHING

There were basically three styles of dressing which was popular


among men in 70’s –

 Traditional style – This style was followed by older and


conservative men.
 Punk style – This style was followed by young men with
elaborate color, pattern and styling.
 Casual trend – This was the most popular style of dressing
during 70’s. Knit wear was very popular that time.

SUITS AND OUTERWEAR


 Safari suit evolved for men and women in late 1960’s.

 LEISURE SUIT –

Leisure suit evolved as a style of dressing in 70’s. Its features were:

 Most were made of polyester or a polyester blend in pastel


shades sometimes with contrasting stitching.

 Some had pocket details and yokes that had more visual
connection to the detailing on western jackets

 This style declined by the end of the decade and became a style
neither appropriate for office nor fashionable enough for casual
occasions.

 Other traditional men’s suit had wide lapels and shaping


through the waist.
 Jackets retained a defined shape.
 Three piece suits began to appear by the middle of 1970’s.

TROUSERS

 Usually flat front trousers with a flared leg was popular at the
beginning of the period.

 Straight-legged, uncuffed trousers came in fashion in mid to


late 70’s.

 Tuxedo shirts came in fashion with ruffled shirt fronts and cuffs.

 Layered look which was called a Preppy look evolved which had
roots in 1950’s. This style was characterized by tweed jackets
sometimes with leather elbow patches and vests.

 Popularity of white polyester suit as shown off by John Travolta


in “Saturday night fever” continued till the end of decade.

 Suit was worn with wide collared shirts unbuttoned to reveal


chest hair and gold jewellery.

CASUAL DRESSING

 Knit shirts, jackets and sweaters with casual and patterned


trousers came in fashion.

 In early 70’s shirts came in all colors except white. Fitted knit
shirts usually in polyester or triacetate had a wide collar and
came in variety of prints and patterns.

 Some men opted for turtlenecks instead of shirts.

 Jeans were seen very less in the wardrobe and followed the
same trend as women’s jeans.

 Hip hugger, flared styles dominated in early 1970’s.

 Athletic clothing trend also inspired men’s clothing including


jogging suits, T-Shirts and sweatshirts.

 Hip slung briefs came in bright colors and geometric prints


along with tank tops.

 Pajamas included shirt styles in woven cottons and blends and


cuffed ski styles in cotton or blended jersey.

CHILDREN’S CLOTHING STYLES

 Casual clothing was common in children.

 Decorated T-Shirts with names and images on the front


appeared for the first time.

 Longer length skirts were in fashion among girls.

 Girls used to wear long pants with wide hems.

 Tunics were also worn over pants and a variety of knit styles.

 Boys had leisure and western style jackets and suits like men.

 Jeans had flared legs in early 70’s but became narrow in late
70’s.

DESIGNERS WHO INFLUENCED FASHION

1) RALPH LAUREN
 Established Polo Ralph Lauren in 1968.
 In 1971, Polo Ralph Lauren launched its first women's collection
and his first stand-alone store in Beverly Hills, California.
 Ralph Lauren corporation has launched various fragrances and
related body care products for men and women since 1978.
 His designs for two films which influenced the ready to wear
world:

2) GIORGIO ARMANI

o Italian designer Giorgio Armani was recognized as a masterful


designer.
o an unconstructed blazer in fine Italian fabric was his specialty
and was copied at every price point.

3) CALVIN KLEIN

 US designer Calvin Klein made simple designs for both men and
women, and became a household name with his designer
jeans.
 In 1971 he was creating elegant but easy to wear sportswear.
 He created his designs with graceful and expensive fabric like
silk charmeuse & cashmere.
 In 1973 he won his first Coty award.

4) BETSEY JOHNSON

 In the 1970s, Johnson took control of the fashion label "Alley


Cat" which was popular with the rock 'n roll musicians of the
day. In her first year, her first collection for Alley Cat reportedly
did $5 million in volume.
 In 1972 she won the Coty Award.
 In 1978, Johnson started her own fashion line.

5) NORMA KAMALI

• Kamali's swimwear has influenced an entire industry each


season since her first collection in 1974.

• In 1978 Kamali divorced her husband, opened a new store at 6


West 56th Street in New York City, and started her OMO
(standing for On My Own) line of clothing. Around this time
Kamali created her famous sweat suit collection and her high-
heeled sneakers, both of which have been often copied.

CLASSIC FASHION

3 PIECE SUIT
 3 piece suits became popular by the film “Saturday night fever”.
 This suit has a pant, vest and jacket that matches.
 Initially it was worn with contrasting long collared shirt and afterwards it continued
with little variations.

 Platform shoes of 70’s have always been in fashion.
