Awareness toward environmental destruction had been developed from time to time

since this problem had been debate severely in Tbilisi conference on 1977. In Malaysian

education ,environmental education had been referred as a process of teaching and learning

toward the understanding on the interaction between the environment and humans.

In 1983, environmental education had been carry through in the subject of Man and

Environment for almost ten years in primary school level. Then, the environmental education

had been replaced in subject science and local study. In 1998, the effort toward the important

of environment literacy had been showed when Curriculum Development Centre had

contribute to the teachers guide book on environmental education to be implemented to

students.

Science is the most relevant subject to implement the environmental education because

of the relationship of the concept of the science with the environment itself. Malaysian had

been achieved four out from the ten objective on science curriculum that had been outlined by

Curriculum Development Centre. Which is to get knowledge on technology and science and

able to relate it with the nature phenomena and everyday experiences.

A study that had been conducted in high school education curriculum which is to

investigate how much environmental knowledge had been implement toward Form four and

Form five sciences subjects which is Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The study showed that

Biology subject had the highest implementation of environmental knowledge compared to the

chemistry and physics subject.

This study was carried out so that science teachers are able to know on how depth the

environmental knowledge had been covered in the sciences subject and how far their student

understanding toward the environmental knowledge.


From my opinion, issue according environmental education had been taken seriously

for about more than 20 years not just by the education system only but by the government as

well. As we can see that a lot of alternative that had been taken by the government organization

and non-government organization as well to make people know the important of environment

is actually related to our life.

This is because of what we can see nowadays that destruction of our environment had

become more and more serious. So, the other alternative to make people know about the

important toward environment is by implement the knowledge of environmental in the

education curriculum.

That why the Curriculum Development Centre stress on the environmental knowledge

toward the curriculum subject in school. Where we can see that the implementation of the

environmental knowledge in the science and Local Study subject. But the Curriculum

Development Centre had stress on the science subject compared to the other subject . this is

because of the science subject itself are really related to the nature and living creature.

The implementation of environmental knowledge to enhance students attitude, skills

and also awareness toward environmental. This implementation are very important so that

students will get better understanding on the literacy toward environmental so that the

environment can be preserve and the student know on how to overcome the problem that related

to the environment. This is because they got the better understanding on the environmental

which is our life are really depend on our environments.

The study that had carried out on the implementation of environmental knowledge

toward the subject biology ,chemistry and also physics showed that all of this subject are related

to the environmental nut it had just covered on the surface of the syllabus.
But the study also show that biology subject had been contribute more on the

environmental knowledge compared to the chemistry and physics subject. Almost all topic in

Form five biology subject had related to the environmental knowledge. Physics had the least

implementation of environmental knowledge and also none of the environmental knowledge

that can be found in physics subject except in Form four syllabus which is energy, power and

efficiency. The environmental knowledge also can be find more on Form four chemistry

subject which is in the topic of hazardous waste.

Teachers can used the research that had been conducted so that the teachers need to take

responsibility on how to implement more deeper on the environmental knowledge except from

the syllabus only so that the students will know the important and also had the consideration

toward the environmental issue and also knowledge.
