Statement of Purpose

A desire to extend my knowledge and enthusiasm to solve demanding problems faced by the
industry today, motivated me to pursue MS(R) in Electrical Engineering with Power Electronics
as my major. During my, undergraduate program, I came across various fundamental of Electrical
and Electronics which reinforce interest. I believe my educational background has inculcated in
me the qualities required to meet inclemency of this demanding course. I have relevant industrial
work experience along with good fundamental knowledge of electronics, also a penchant for
teamwork and leadership.
I have two years of industrial work experience in the firm that helps to design custom hardware
design, development, prototyping and manufactures low to mid volume hardware. The prime focus
of entire tenure was on PCB (Printed Circuit Board) testing and debugging of various products and
also involved in production activities. I am familiar with SMD (Surface Mount Device)
components of various packages, soldering, test equipment like DSO (Digital Storage
Oscilloscope), function generator, DMM (Digital Multimeter), etc. These skill sets and experience
helped me a lot in my further steps. I have worked on many projects right from my diploma, and
on top gained a better exposure towards Analog electronics. I have an experience in hardware level
designing and troubleshooting. I am good at schematics and PCB layout designing and
manufacturing. I have designed many single-layered as well as double-layered PCBs in Eagle
CAD. I also help and take up projects from juniors of my college as well as students from other
institutes and assist them in completing the same.
I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering in which we have power
electronics as a subject. This subject grabs my interest in high power electronic circuits. As a
capstone project, we are working on power quality meter (PQ) that senses the power quality of
microgrid i.e. power factor (PF), True power (P) and reactive power (Q). Along with this, the
energy consumption parameter is sent to the server so that the user can monitor energy parameters
from a web application. This will assist the user to initiate preventive action. From the literature
survey, around 1.1 million households are utilizing solar energy to meet their lighting energy
needs, Photovoltaic systems are being used for a variety of application. Since the solar industry is
growing rapidly, I wanted to enhance my skills in this domain. Therefore, I want to take admission
in such reputed institute of India to carve a niche skill in power electronics domain. In our college,
we have Tinkerer’s Laboratory where a group of students, take up projects and implement them
while maintaining the balance in their academic performance. During my third year, I came to
know about the project “Dynamic voltage restorer (DVR)”, for improving the power quality of the
grid. We worked on this project for 6 months and were able to develop the hardware part but the
software part was challenging. We are unprovided with such training and exposure for this DSP
TMS320F28377S coding to design the control system. This is also one of the reasons I want to do
Master’s from IIT Kanpur.
I am also appearing for GATE 2019 test from ECE branch and I fervently believe that it is essential
to have a good knowledge of the fundamentals of one’s domain.
As the next milestone in my career progression, I would like pursuing my Master’s Program from
a well-reputed institute of India. I believe that graduate study in a reputed department is important
for a person aspiring for a research career.
I sincerely feel that the Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Kanpur, with its excellent
facilities and faculty, will provide a favourable atmosphere for me to pursue my studies. In essence,
I believe that a good graduate program is an essential step for succeeding in my professional
ambition of becoming a competent researcher. I possess the motivation, intellectual ability and
preparation to do justice to a demanding graduate program. I sincerely hope to receive a positive
response from your esteemed Institute.
