Babylog VN500
Executive summary

 The Babylog 8000 was launched in 1989 as a revolutionary new ventilator for premature
neonates. It was one of the first microprocessor controlled devices with outstanding accuracy
and already a proximal flowsensor.
 The existing Babylog 8000 plus was launched in 1998 and managed to sell over 16,000 units
until today. The Babylog 8000 can be considered as the worldwide standard in neonatal
ventilation. The brand Dräger Babylog is known across the globe and has an excellent
reputation. However, a large part of the installed base of Babylogs 8000 is old and is urgently
needing replacement. Over the past years Dräger was not able to offer a real successor to
this world class product.
 With the introduction of the Babylog VN500 we will be able to offer a new dedicated neonatal
ventilator with the name Babylog, which builds on the good reputation of the Babylog 8000.
The conventional ventilation of Babylog VN500 will be extended by the optional applications
Automatic Tube Compensation and Mandatory Minute Ventilation; the optional application
High Frequency Oscillation will be able to cover the complete neonatal range and even will
reach into pediatric HFO application; the human interface will set a new standard in
customization and ease of use and the Smart Pulmonary Display together with many other
process supporting features will enable the Babylog VN500 to be another building block of the
Infinity Acute Care System.

Babylog VN500
Executive summary

 With the release of the Babylog VN500 1st release there will finally be a completely new
neonatal ventilator that will set a new standard in the market and will provide a platform for
future innovations in neonatal ventilation. The development of the Babylog VN500 is based on
current platform system architecture providing full range conventional neonatal ventilation,
support of non invasive respiratory treatment and a powerful High Frequency Oscillation. The
Babylog VN500 is a part of the Infinity Acute Care System and will use the same operating
principle, nomenclature, service concept and modular system architecture as the Evita Infinity
V500.
 Babylog VN500 shall be positioned as the preferred intensive care ventilator for the NICU
level 3, providing all levels of respiratory care and part of the Infinity Acute Care System,
supporting bedside (and hospital) processes. It will mainly focus on the developed markets. In
addition it shall be positioned in the private hospitals of emerging markets.
 The Babylog 8000 plus will be positioned in NICU level 2 in the developed market.

volume as area of VT over RR
 The Smart Pulmonary View can be
calibrated to the patient status
 The Smart Pulmonary View has been
developed together with Dr. Blike
from USA
 Further developments are planned
and feedback / ideas appreciated !

18 | 34 Technical Training BabylogVN500 | G. Hagelstein | 01.04.2019

Smart Pulmonary View

Benefits of Smart Pulmonary View:

 Easy recognition of changes of lung status and pattern of breathing

– Especially in neonates rapid changes in compliance are common
– Increased resistance e.g. due to mucus can be easily detected
 Quicker reaction of care giver due to graphical visualization
 Reduction of cognitive load

19 | 34 Technical Training BabylogVN500 | G. Hagelstein | 01.04.2019

Customization ob Babylog VN500

The following user specific configurations are possible:

 start settings and alarm limits
 standard modes of ventilation
 detailed settings for specific modes
 3 main screens with different layout and contents
 standard value list
 standard graphical trend parameters
 main menu buttons

The benefits are:

 Effortless and individual adaptation of human interface to customer needs
 Adaptation of therapy types and modes to customer needs
 Easy operation

20 | 34 Technical Training BabylogVN500 | G. Hagelstein | 01.04.2019

CO2 Monitoring

 Babylog VN500 offers a mainstream CO2 monitoring

 The following information is provided:
– Capnogram waveform
– etCO2
 The CO2-Option is the same as for Evita V500
 A pediatric cuvette is available and has a VD of 5 ml; therefore it can be
recommended only for bigger neonatal or pediatric patients.
 Clinical value in premature neonates is not proven and the use of CO 2 monitoring is
not a standard. However, some users use the etCO2 as a trend information in order
to detect adequate time for new BGA.

28 | 34 Technical Training BabylogVN500 | G. Hagelstein | 01.04.2019

What is HFV and how does it work ?

Definition
 Application of high CPAP
 Maintain open lung volume
 Recruit lung volume to optimise oxygenation.

 Combined with a technique that utilizes supra-physiologic rates to deliver small

tidal volumes to remove CO2

Rationale
 To reduce pressure/volume related injury to lung parenchyma
 Decrease the risk of airleak and chronic lung disease
 To facilitate the resolution of existing airleak.

29 | 34 Technical Training BabylogVN500 | G. Hagelstein | 01.04.2019

What is high frequency ventilation?

 Frequencies from 5 - 50 Hz (300 - 3.000 / min.)

 Tidal volumes in the range of the dead space volume (approx. 2 ml/kgBW)
 Active in - and expiration
