Course Outline Plan


Course Number MG-109

Course Name Total Quality Management


The objectives of this course are to enable students to:

1. Demonstrate and make effective use of relevant terminology and concepts of


the field of Quality Assurance and Management
2. Demonstrate and develop critical understanding of this field as applied
currently in different organizations in Pakistan and how it should actually be
applied
3. apply their knowledge and understanding of this field in a wide range of
Learning Objectives appropriate organizational contexts in which students may be working
4. develop knowledge and understanding of how the main types of business and
commercial organizations have organized their Quality Assurance and
Management
5. To learn analytical abilities in students for the appropriate use of TQM models
and framework
6. To learn important tools and techniques in Total Quality Management
7. To build interest in and appreciation of the field of Quality Assurance and
Management as a career
Total Periods There will be 16 Lectures & 2.5 hrs each
1. Pre-Class Self Study: Students are required to study the assigned material
before they come to class.
2. Class discussion: Critical thinking will be evolved in the subject through
Learning Strategy &
effective class debate and discussions.
Techniques
3. Lecture: The instructor will deliver a lecture on the topic
4. Case Studies: These will be provided and discussed in the class.

Students are expected to understand the topics effectively and be able to


translate it into practical scenarios. Exams will be mainly based on the
understanding, analysis application of the topics. Students are strongly
recommended to consult material other than the textbooks. Marks will be provided

1. Mid Term Exam
2. Final Exam
3. Assessments and Class Participation
One industrial visit to a company practicing Quality Assurance and Management
will be done by the class. The visit and its report is mandatory and will carry 8%
Industrial Visit
marks.

Class Rules
• Students entering late in the class for more than 10
minutes will be marked absent
• Respect and dignity of every person in the class must
be maintained at all times.
• Switch off the mobiles in the class
• No eatable allowed in the class especially chewing of
gum is highly forbidden
• Proper and decent dressing is required in the class
• Cell phones should be turned off before the exam.
Instructor
Dr. Kamran Moosa is the CEO and Principal Consultant of the PIQC Institute of Quality (formerly
Pakistan Institute of Quality Control). He was the first elected chairman of Quality and Productivity
Society of Pakistan (QPSP), the national association of Quality Professionals in Pakistan. He did his
PhD in Engineering Management from Centre for Advance Studies in Engineering – University of
Engineering & Technology Taxila, MSc in TQM from Sheffield Hallam University (UK), BSc
Engineering from Wright State University (USA), and Professional Certificate in Factory
Management from AOTS Japan. He is Six Sigma Black Belt in Quality. He is the Convener of
Professional Certifications of QPSP. He is a Senior Member of American Society for Quality and
IRCA (UK) Registered Quality Management System Lead Auditor. He has 20 years of practical
experience in the field of Quality Assurance and Management in the industry, academia, consulting
and teaching. He was selected by the Asian Productivity Organization (APO Japan) as a national
expert in TQM in 1995. He is an author of three books published in Pakistan and a chapter for a book
published by APO Japan: (1) Quality Management Practices, (2) Practical Guide to ISO 9000, (3)
Quality Control, and (4) A chapter in “Implementing Quality Management in Asian and Pacific
Countries” by APO. He has his many papers published and presented in international conference
proceedings in Pakistan, Japan, UAE, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Iran and Nepal. He is in the
Panel of book reviewers with the American Society for Quality and in the Board of Editors of the
Journal of the Institute of Quality Assurance UK. He is also an honorary Director and the Chief
Editor of the magazine “Quest for Quality” of Middle East Quality Association (MEQA). He is a
Lead Tutor for the QMS Lead Auditor Courses with IQCS Singapore and Six Sigma courses by SQII
Singapore. He is presently contributing in many national and international quality forums for the
development and progress of the field of Quality Assurance and Management.
