1. Features that change when a PowerPoint 2007 presentation is opened in PowerPoint 2003

The following features change when you open your Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 presentation in an
earlier version of PowerPoint (with the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office Word, Excel
and PowerPoint File Formats installed).

Office PowerPoint 2007 What happens to the feature when you open an Office PowerPoint
feature 2007 presentation in an earlier version of PowerPoint
Charts (except Microsoft Charts are converted to OLE objects, which you can edit. However, a
Graph charts) chart may appear differently if you edit it in an earlier version of
PowerPoint and then reopen it in Office PowerPoint 2007.
Custom slide layouts Custom slide layouts that have specific backgrounds, unique slide
transitions, and more are represented as multiple masters.
Drop shadows Soft outer shadows are converted to hard shadows that you can edit.
Heading and body fonts Heading and body fonts are converted to static formatting. If you then
reopen the file in Office PowerPoint 2007 and use a different style,
heading and body fonts do not automatically change.
Shapes, pictures, objects, New visual features or effects that are available in Office PowerPoint
animations, and new effects, 2007 are converted to uneditable pictures in earlier versions of
including the following: PowerPoint.
 Two-dimensional (2-D) or
three-dimensional (3-D) text
 Gradient outlines on
shapes or text
 Strikethrough and double-
strikethrough on text
 Gradient, picture, and
texture fills on text
 Shadows, soft edges,
reflections, and most 3-D
effects on any kind of object
SmartArt graphics SmartArt graphics are converted to uneditable pictures in earlier versions
of PowerPoint.

2. Images in PowerPoint 2007, when opened in the old versions lose their formatting

PowerPoint 2007 has an option to automatically compress images when you save the presentation. This
option is turned on by default. To turn compression off (but only for the current presentation):

1. Choose File, Save As

2. In the Save As dialog box click Tools
3. Choose Compress Pictures
4. On the Compress Pictures dialog box, click Options
5. On the Compression Settings dialog box that appears, remove the check next to "Automatically
perform basic compression on save"
6. Optionally remove the check next to "Delete cropped areas of pictures"
7. Click OK to dismiss the Compression Settings dialog box
8. Click OK to dismiss the Compress Pictures dialog box
9. Back in the Save As dialog box, you can either go ahead and save or cancel. The compression
options you just set will be preserved either way

If you've already inserted any pictures, be sure to do this BEFORE you save your presentation. Otherwise
it'll be too late. Your pictures will be compressed when you save

Please note that turning compression off applies only to the current presentation.

A more thorough solution

To really fix the problem, you'll need to edit the registry.

1. Close Power Point

2. Open registry editor (Start /Run and type Regedit)
3. Go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\PowerPoint\Options]
4. Create a new Dword value named AutomaticPictureCompressionDefault
5. Make sure that the value of the new Dword is 0
6. Close registry editor

Now, by default, PowerPoint does not compress pictures. If we want to enable compression, go back to
the same registry key and change the value from 0 to 1

3. How to align text boxes (e.g., source and footnotes box)

Go to the text properties of the text box and choose “Do not Autofit” option. If you do not choose this
option over “resize shape to fit text” option, the text box will move upwards as we delete any of the
footnotes which are not required.

Please download and install a hotfix available on Microsoft help and support page
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941658/en-us.

4. Compatibility of Visual Toolbar with PowerPoint 2007

Except for the textual objects (including our bullet points), we can use the objects from Visual Tool bar for
PowerPoint 2007. While editing charts taken from visual toolbar, please make sure that you choose the
“edit existing” option (this will retain the chart format originally built in PowerPoint 2003).

5. Editing boxes inserted in PowerPoint 2007 using earlier versions of PowerPoint.

Reason: Text with one or more of the following effects present only in PowerPoint 2007: reflection, glow,
bevel, shadow (inner or perspective), warping transform, 3-D rotation, text outlines, or fills (gradient,
picture, and texture).

Solution: Remove the text effect, outline, effects or gradient fill.

6. How to change the ruler units from centimeters to inches (as PowerPoint 2003)

1. In Windows click Start, and then click Control Panel

2. Double-click Regional Options or Regional and Language Options
The options that appear are different for each version of Windows:
a. If you are working in Windows XP, click the Regional Options tab, and then click Customize. On
the Numbers tab, in the Measurement system list, click Metric
b. If you are not using Windows XP, look for a Numbers option that includes a Measurements
setting, and then change the value to U.S.
3. Apply the changes, and then start PowerPoint

The rulers will now display measurements in the system that you have chosen

7. How to use the shortcuts in PowerPoint 2007

1. First, press ALT

2. The letters and numbers, called Key Tips, that are the designated shortcut keys appear (Picture 1),
shown as little white squares, on various parts of the Ribbon. They show as letters on all the Ribbon
tabs and the Microsoft Office Button. They are numbers on the Quick Access Toolbar. The little white
squares containing the Key Tips are called badges. Press one of the keys designated to get to more
commands and buttons. For example, press the H key to display all the Key Tips for the groups on
the Home tab (Picture 2)
3. Then press one of the Key Tips in a group to complete the sequence. For example, pressing ALT, H,
L would be the equivalent of clicking the Layout button

Please see the screenshots below for examples.

8. How to add footer and slide number

1. Click the Insert tab.

2. In the Text group, click Header & Footer.
3. On the Slide tab in the dialog box, click Slide number
4. To include text on every slide, click Footer, and type your text. For example,
“Proprietary & Confidential. © 2008 Everest Global, Inc.”
5. Click Apply to All.

9. How to use the slide master in PowerPoint 2007

The title master (title master: The slide that stores information from the design template pertaining to
styles on title slides, including placeholder sizes and positions, background design, and color schemes.) is
not available in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007. Instead, Office PowerPoint 2007 uses layouts
(layout: The arrangement of elements, such as title and subtitle text, lists, pictures, tables, charts, shapes,
and movies, on a slide.) to define content formatting and positioning for slides in your presentation. If you
do not find a standard layout that suits your needs, you can add a new layout.

To create a new layout, you must first add a layout to a slide master in Slide Master view. After you add a
layout, you can begin to structure it by adding text-specific and object-specific placeholders.

1. On the View tab, in the Presentation Views group, click Slide Master
2. In the pane that contains the slide masters and layouts, click a location below the slide master
where you want the new layout to appear
3. On the Slide Master tab, in the Edit Master group, click Insert Layout
4. To modify the layout that you just added, do one or more of the following:
 To remove an unwanted, default placeholder, click the border of the placeholder, and then
press DELETE
 To add a placeholder, do the following:

a. On the Slide Master tab, in the Master Layout group, click Insert Placeholder, and
then select a placeholder type from the list
b. Click a location on the layout, and then drag to draw the placeholder.
To resize a placeholder, drag one of its corner borders

5. Click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Save As

6. In the File name box, type a file name, or do nothing to accept the suggested file name
7. In the Save as type list, click PowerPoint Template, and then click Save

The layout that you added and customized now appears in the list of standard, built-in layouts in Normal
view, located on the Home tab, in the Slides group and can be used by clicking Layout.

10. Understanding “Layouts” in PowerPoint 2007

Slide layouts define containers, positioning, and formatting for all of the content that appears on a slide.
Placeholders are the containers in layouts that hold such content as text (including body text, bulleted
lists, and titles), tables, charts, SmartArt graphics, movies, sounds, pictures, and clip art (clip art: A single
piece of ready-made art, often appearing as a bitmap or a combination of drawn shapes).

Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 includes nine built-in slide layouts, or you can create custom layouts that meet
your specific needs.

If you do not find a standard layout that suits your needs or the needs of presentation authors within your
organization, you can create a custom layout. With Custom Slide Layouts, you can create the type of
layout you need when you need it so you are never confined to prepackaged layouts. This gives you the
flexibility to create layouts that contain multiple elements—and you can even have multiple slide master
sets with custom layouts for different slide topics. In addition, you always have the option of saving your
layout for future use.

You can also distribute custom layouts as part of a template (template: A file or set of files that contains
information about the theme, layout, and other elements of a finished presentation.), so you no longer
have to waste valuable time cutting and pasting your layouts onto new slides or deleting content on a slide
that you want to use with new and different content.

11. Features and commands removed from PowerPoint in PowerPoint 2007

Most of the features listed below (in alphabetical order) are no longer available in PowerPoint 2007.
However, you can click the links to get more information about each and, in many cases, learn how to
achieve a similar end result.

 Add a slide from another presentation file

 Allow fast saves option
 AutoContent Wizard
 Commands on the Web toolbar
 Presentation broadcast add-in to record, schedule, or start a live broadcast
 Copy a presentation to a CD, network, or local disk drive (includes information about copying to
DVD)
 Summary slides and table of contents slides
 Support for Apple QuickTime movie (.mov) files
 Title master
 Toolbars (For more information about the tabs and groups in PowerPoint 2007 that replace
toolbars, see Reference: Locations of PowerPoint 2003 commands in PowerPoint 2007)

13. PowerPoint 2007 performance is very slow when working with some presentations

Any problems related to slow performance are probably due to a bad printer driver or an old installation of
the printer driver. Please take the help of your system/IT administrator to change the default driver to one
that is Microsoft certified for the Windows version.

The driver should be locally installed (i.e., the driver should reside on your PC, not on a network, though
you can "connect" a locally installed driver TO a network printer).

Also, setting the local printer (primoPDF) as default printer helps in enhancing PowerPoint performance.
This can be done by:
• Click on Start>Settings>Printers
• Right-click on printer named primoPDF and choose “set as Default Printer”.
