It is also called as extended family where people from different generations live
together with a common goal of mutual advancement.
This type of family is common in India, Africa and Middle east which are mainly

This type of family structure is prevalent in rural India. With modernization and
industrialization this family structure is being replaced by a new type of nuclear
family with a small family size and reduced advancement goal.
By definition, it is the number of married couples that live together in the same
house. Men are related by same blood .

of member from two to three generation.

jointly held with all the family members.

roof. Though when the family becomes larger some members can live in a separate
house but within the close proximity.
4. Close blood ties : All the members in the joint family are bounded by close
blood ties. They belong to same ancestors.
5. Absolute power of the head: In a joint family the eldest male member or the
head enjoy absolute power over others. In every respect his decision is final and
binding.

With a total of 181 members, this Indian family residing at Baktawng Village in India's
north-east state of Mizoram, is probably the largest in the world. 67-year-old Ziona,
who heads the family, lives in a four-storeyed purple mansion with his 39 wives,
94children and 14 daughters-in-law and over 40 grandchildren.

The Narasingannavaras of Lokur, a village 20 km from Dharwad, are said to be


the largest joint family in India.

Disadvantages of joint family

 Hindrance in the development of personality: With less focus on individual


development, there is hindrance in the personality development of individual

 Loss of privacy: As compared to nuclear family, in joint family privacy is very
