The ame of God, Divine titles and other capitalized terms in
The Original Aramaic ew Testament in Plain English
The Aramaic Bible (OT & NT) contains the Name
“MarYah” about 7000 times. The O.T. portion contains this Name about 6800 times as a translation of the Hebrew Name, “YHWH”. “MarYah” is a compound term, combining “Mar”- “Lord” + “Yah”, which is the shortened Hebrew Name for God, from “YHWH”. “Yah” occurs in the Hebrew Bible 49 times. Below is a photo of the Sacred Name in the two oldest
(about 1000 years old) Hebrew manuscripts of the complete or nearly complete Hebrew Bible: Aleppo Leningrad
& printed יְ ה ֹוָהin an
electronic facsimile edition of Codex Leningrad. It is so printed in all of its 6828 occurrences in printed traditional Hebrew Bibles. It is pronounced “Yehovah” or “Yehowah” with the vowels as written in those manuscripts in Genesis 3:14 (Aleppo lacks Genesis) and 49 other places. Usually the middle vowel is omitted by the Massorete scribes, to prevent pronunciation of the sacred name. In fifty places in Codex Leningrad, the middle vowel (holem) is included. It is as if the scribe inadvertantly wrote the vowel, giving away the true pronunciation in 50 out of 6828 occurrences of the Divine name. I have a reprint of the 1705 Van der Hooght Biblia Hebraica from the Bagster Polyglot Bible and a 1909 Hebrew Bible; both have the three vowels –Sheva,Holem,Kamats, (e,o,a) everywhere printed with the Tetragrammaton YHWH. This means “YeHoVaH” occurs 6828 times in The Hebrew Bible. The theory that the Massorete scribes inserted the vowels for “Adonai” (“Lord”) into “YHWH” to make “Yehovah” is simply incorrect. The vowels are not the same in “Adonai”. The first vowel in “Adonai” is “Hateph Pathah”, underneath the letter Aleph, with a short “a” sound. In “Yehovah”, the first vowel is “Shewa”, underneath the letter Yodh, with a short “e” sound. Here I reproduce the two words in Hebrew, with the vowel points:
אֲ דֹנָי-(Adonai); יְ הוָֹה-(Yehovah).
I have grey-shaded the first letter of each word with the vowel points underneath the letters. These are taken from the electronic facsimile edition of Codex Leningrad. The “Adonai” theory is so easily refuted that it is hard to understand why it is so persistently cited. The English “Jehovah” is also consistent with English transliteration of other Hebrew names, such as Mrwhy Y@howram yeh-ho-rawm’- Jehoram , jpvwhy Y@howshaphat yeh-ho-shaw- fawt’ – Jehoshaphat, edywhy Y@howyada‘ yeh-ho-yaw-daw’- Jehoiada , Mrwhy Y@howram yeh-ho-rawm’-Jehoram , and many others, all of which contain -why - Yeho- (The Sacred Name) in the first half of the compound name. No printed edition has the pronunciation “Yahweh”, nor has any Jewish translation of the Tanach (The Hebrew Bible).
The Aramaic “MarYah” I have therefore translated as “THE
LORD JEHOVAH” throughout the Peshitta New Testament. I am not a Jehovah’s Witness, nor do I subscribe to the views of that group concerning the Godhead and Jesus Christ. I do believe they are accurate and consistent in translating the Sacred Name in the Old Testament and in reverse translating the Greek NT title- “Kurios” (“Lord”, “master”, “sir”) to “Jehovah” in most of the 239 places where it should be. The Greek NT has the Divine Name not even once! This is true also of the Greek translation of the Old Testament, called the Septuagint (LXX, for its seventy translators). The Peshitta Aramaic New Testament names Jesus (from the Greek “Iaysous”) as “MarYah” -“THE LORD JEHOVAH” 32 times, at least! This the Jehovah’s Witnesses & most western churches have yet to understand and accept.
I have attempted to capitalize all noun predicates of The Deity:
“The Boy”, “The Nazarene”, “The Teacher”, “The Son”, “The Father”, “The Spirit”, etc.. I also capitalize proper names of groups, such as “Pharisees”, “Sadducees”, “Herodians”, “Romans”, etc.., as well as hierarchical categories, such as “Servants”, “Masters”, “Priests”, “Levites”, “Soldiers”, “Rulers”, “Angels”. Both singular and plural of these terms are capitalized.
Another important distinction in this translation is my translation
of the Aramaic phrase, “Ena na” – ana ana as “I AM THE LIVIG GOD”, in most of the 46 places where it occurs. The Aramaic phrase is an idiom in The Old Testament Peshitta in which God introduces himself in 98% of its 223 occurrences. Only four exceptions exist in which it is used by a mere human, in which cases it simply means, “I am”, or “It is I”. In most of the New Testament cases, it is uttered by Yeshua The Messiah; a few are OT quotations of God’s speech: “THE LORD JEHOVAH said to Moses, ‘I AM THE LIVIG GOD’…” Jesus spoke these words about 30 times of those recorded, most of which are in John’s Gospel. Several times the term stands alone: “Unless you believe that ‘Ena Na’, you shall die in your sins.”-John 8:24 When the Aramaic is properly rendered (“I AM THE LIVIG GOD”), this does illuminate some obscure passages, especially where the statement stands alone: “So you may know that I am”, does not make good sense. “So you may know that I AM THE LIVIG GOD”, makes excellent sense. This stand alone statement occurs five times in Yohannan (John): ( 8:24,28; 13:19, 18:6,8). Hundreds of soldiers who had come to arrest him were knocked down backwards when Yeshua answered with this two word phrase! This is testament to the fact that it meant more than, “It is I”; much more!
Combining the 30 occurrences of his statements- “I AM THE
LIVIG GOD”, with at least 32 places where Yeshua (Jesus) is named “THE LORD JEHOVAH” (or “YAHWEH”, if you prefer), yields 62 testimonies to The absolute Deity of The Messiah Yeshua in The Peshitta Aramaic +ew Testament not to be found in the Greek New Testament.
