About the Programme

Q) What is the difference between MDS and EMDS degrees?
EMDS programme is of 24 credits and MDS is of 48 credits, where the extra 24 credits is from the two Capstone
Projects done in the third year. Unlike EMDS, MDS is equivalent to regular MTech from IITH.

Q) What if I want to do only 24 credits of courses and not the Capstone projects?
You can then get an EMDS degree instead of the MDS degree.

Q) Is MDS equivalent to a regular MTech program?

Yes, it is equivalent to regular M.Tech. The regular MTech degree from IITH requires a student to take 48 credits.
Similarly, MDS degree also has 48 credits. The scheduling of the classes is differently done only to facilitate
consistent attendance of the working professionals.

Q) Does MDS belong to part-time, online or distance education category?

No, MDS does not belong to any of the part-time, online or distance education category. Unlike part-time
program, students of MDS have to attend the classes throughout the semester. Unlike other contemporary online
programs, students of MDS have to attend live classes either from IITH campus or from remote location without
any facility to record the video session of the class. Unlike distance education category, students of MDS have to
attend live classes throughout the semester without any facility to acquire the course content through online /
postal means.

Q) Will I be able to pursue a PhD in Computer Science post this MDS program?
Yes, it is similar to a regular MTech degree from IITH.

Q) Will I be able to pursue a teaching career in future if interested post my MDS completion?
It depends on the institute where you are applying.

Q) After finishing this program do I get a degree or certificate of completion?

Yes, you will get the degree “MTech in Data Science” from CSE department at IITH.

Outstation or Abroad Students

Q) Can I do this programme from abroad?
The courses are conducted remotely. You only need to visit the campus 1-2 times in a semester. The dates would
be announced quite early for you to plan the visits. At present, students visit the campus only once per semester to
give final exam. Everything else is done remotely.

Q) Is it possible for someone to go through the program if he is not staying in Hyderabad?

Same answer as above. A large fraction of our existing MDS students are not from Hyderabad.

Eligibility Criteria
Q) I am from branches other than CS/EE/IT/ECE. Am I eligible for MDS programme if I have experience in data
science?
No. This programme is quite programming intensive. It would be difficult for people without CS background to
do the programming required in the courses.

Q) One of the eligibility criteria for the programme is minimum 2 years of work experience. By which date one
should have this minimum work experience? Can this be relaxed if I am missing it by few days?
You should have two years of work experience by the last date for submitting online applications. This criteria
cannot be relaxed.

Selection Process
Q) I have applied for the MDS programme. However, I am not shortlisted for written test. Why I have not been
shortlisted? What is the shortlisting criteria for written test?
We are sorry that we receive a large number of applications and can shortlist only a limited number of candidates
for the written test due to limited number of seats.
The shortlisting criteria is a confidential information. For each application, we compute an aggregated score based
on the candidate’s relevant work experience, academic record, such as percentage, publications, etc. We select
certain fraction of candidates based on this aggregated score.

Q) I am in process of applying to this program. Can you please let me know if the written test can be waived of
for a candidate who has more than 8 years of experience in data sciences?
Written test is compulsory for all candidates.

Q) Since this is designed for value addition to working professionals, how do I (who completed Engineering 10
years ago) compete with those applicants who completed the graduation just before 2 years or are in academic line
studying same subjects on which questions will be asked. I may have done fairly well in the organization I may
be serving in Data Science field, but naturally won’t be comfortable answering questions related to Probability or
Data Structures, etc which I studied long ago.
We are aware of this problem. So our admission process has two parts: Objective Test and Background in Data
Science test. In general, we expect fresh graduates to do somewhat better in the objective test. However, one who

does not have experience in Data Science cannot do the second paper so well, as these questions test your existing
knowledge of data science. We select by looking at the score of both the tests. Since this programme is offered by
IIT, it has high technical rigor. You need to have a good programming and mathematical background to do well in
the programme, which is tested through the objective test.

Admission Test
Q) I am staying outside Hyderabad. Could you please let me know is there is any test center outside Hyderabad
or if any provision for online test?
No, there is no provision for an online test. The candidate needs to come to IIT Hyderabad for the test.

Q) What is the venue for the admission exam?

It would be in the permanent campus, which is in Kandi. If someone seeks hostel accommodation for the test, they
would be given the accommodation in the ODF campus. Frequent institute buses are available between the two
campuses.

Q) What is the syllabus and admission process for MDS admission?

The candidate has to pass an admission test that comprises of four phases: Profile Screening, Objective Test,
Background in DS, and Interview.

Profile screening is done according to past academic record, prior research exposure and/or industry experience in
areas related to data science.

Objective exam will consist of multiple choice questions on basics of Computer Science and Data Science.
Relevant courses are Programming, Probability, Data Structures and Algorithms, Discrete Mathematics,
Databases, and basic concepts in Statistics, Data Mining, Machine Learning.

In the Background in Data Science test, you would be required to answer some questions related to your
background in Data Science. This would be a test of your writing skill and past background in Data Science. We
would prefer to take candidates who are already familiar to Data Science.

For the candidates who qualify the written test, we will conduct 15-20 minutes interview through Phone/Skype.
The interviews will be done few days after the written test. The exact date and timing will be informed after you
pass the written test.
