The Effect of Technology on Education

The progress of technology that has developed rapidly has affected all aspects of
human life, both in the fields of politics, economics, culture, and then education.
Technological progress is something that we cannot avoid in the modern era like now,
because development of knowledge influenced by technological development. Technological
advancements have created a global learning environment related to networks which put
students on modernity in the learning process, surrounded by various learning resources and
electronic learning services. Every technology must have a positive or negative impact. The
positive benefits that can be gained from technological advancements are providing
convenience in the field of education, especially as one source of knowledge and reference in
learning, accessing all knowledge or education’s material easily, but as well as providing
positive benefits, technological advances can also have negative impacts that can plunge into
things which is not good. Therefore, there are some positive and negative effects of
technology on education.

First, the use of technology in education can be used as a source of knowledge and a
center of knowledge. Mass Media, especially Electronic Media as a source of knowledge and
education center like the Internet network, Lab. School Computers and others. The impact of
this is that the teacher is not the only source of knowledge, so students in learning do not
need to be too fixated on the information taught by the teacher, but also can access study
material directly from the Internet. Using technology can help students access all knowledge
without restrictions and easier. There are some things that we cannot get from the teacher that
we can get through technology. For example, students can search for their own national exam
material on the internet and also students can learn on their own by accessing tutorial videos
on the internet, such as the web of “ruang guru” or quiver video.

The use of technology helps educators in creating new learning methods and
facilitates all educational actions. With the advancement of technology new methods are
created which are expected to make students able to understand abstract material. For
example, e-learning methods are learning methods that use the internet in delivering learning
in a wide range. Through it teaching and learning process is more effective and we can be
more up to data in getting the information available. In addition, technology also helps
education personnel in managing education problems more practically, such as making
computer-based examinations to make it easier for educators and students alike. The
fulfillment of the need for educational facilities can be met quickly. Other then, it make easier
to share and get information or policies in the world of education. With the technology in
school, the school will be able to keep up with the times of globalization.

Technology helps educators and students more easily in the teaching and learning
process in terms of communication or otherwise. The learning system does not have to be
face to face. Communication as a medium of education is done by using communication
media such as telephone, computer, internet, e-mail and so on. Such as online discussions and
online classes where educators and students do not need to meet in person to study and teach,
simply by using SKYPE or other applications for example. By using such technology, it will
provide its own advantages such as saving time and effort and certainly more interesting.
Other than that, with technological advances in education, it will help improve the quality of
human resources better.

Besides positive influences, using technology also has negative impact on education
in Indonesia. Uncontrolled use of technology make students become lazy to learn, with the
advancement of technology should be able to facilitate students in learning, such as laptops
with internet networks, this makes students lazy to learn, sometimes many of them only
spend time on the internet, which only brings pleasure, not to increase knowledge, such as
playing games, facebook, twitter, etc. all of which will affect students' interest in learning and
make students too dependent on technology. In addition, confidential tests for education is
increasingly threatened, easily being able to access from one area to another that can be used
by irresponsible individuals such as leakage of exam questions that can disturb the
government and society.

In conclusion, the use of technology in education can be a good thing but also has a
bad risk. It all depends on how we respond it by using the technology effectively for things
that we think are important. If technology is misused for things that are not good in education
it will make the world of education become uncontrolled. So be wise in utilizing this
technology in modern era for improve your knowledge.
