The Environment - 10-15 minutes

For this session you will need:

• Candles for the room

• Blackout material for all light (windows, doorjambs, etc.) so that you can create as dark a room as possible

Room set up:

Black out all sources of ambient light, then set up enough candles around the room to provide a low-lit atmosphere.

Opener:
After all the students have arrived and settled, have them sit in a circle. Ask them to share with the person next to them a
time when they have ever felt betrayed. Was it a friend or family member? How did it make you feel? Did that incident
make it more difficult to trust people in the future? Why or why not?

Share a personal story of a time when you felt betrayed, and how you responded.

Say something like: For most people, betrayal brings about an intense feeling of isolation and loneliness. It’s as if the bot-
tom of our world has dropped out and we are completely up against the universe by ourselves. It’s what one author calls
“The Dark Night of the Soul”.

At this point, have some adults/older students light the candles. After the candles are lit, turn off the regular lights and al-
low a few seconds of silence. After a few seconds, say something like: Each betrayal experience pushes us further and fur-
ther into a dark feeling of loneliness. While you are saying this, walk around the room and start blowing out the candles.
Every few candles, briefly describe a betrayal scenario (“the father who left”, “the friend who cheated”, “the sibling who
lied”, etc.) before you extinguish them.

Keep blowing out candles until the room is in complete darkness. Allow a few moments of silence, then say something like:
Tonight we are going to begin our journey through the Passion by looking at suffering that Jesus endured not at the hands
of his enemies- but of the ones He trusted most. If you are feeling alone and isolated at this moment, think about how
Christ must have felt. Take the emotion you are feeling right now and multiply it by infinity. As we journey through the
first part of The Passion this evening, try and put yourself in Christ’s place as you witness the events unfold.

The Experience - Approximately 20 minutes

Immediately start the DVD– Chapters 1-7

The Exploration - 10-15 minutes

After stopping the film, allow a few moments of silence in darkness, then say something like:
Jesus knows betrayal. Jesus knows pain. Can you imagine what it must have felt like having every one of His friends fall
asleep when He needed support and run away when He needed someone at His side? If you have ever thought or felt that
you were all alone in the universe and there is no one who understands you or what you are going through- I have great
news for you- there is.

Light a candle that you are holding, then go around and start lighting the other candles. Every few candles, repeat the sce-
narios you described earlier, and this time recite a verse which represents the empathy and hope that Christ brings (“the
father who left- Jesus said ‘I will never leave you or forsake you’, etc.)

The Effect - 10-15 minutes

Say something like: Perhaps you are here tonight and for the first time in your life you finally realize that there is a person
who knows, who understands, who cares, and who most importantly wants to have a relationship with you. Present the
gospel journey (located at www.dare2share.org/262), then give an invitation. As well, you can address the believers in the
group by saying something like: Perhaps you are here tonight and you realize that you have been playing the part of the
disciples that we saw in the film tonight. When the time comes for you to stand up and be counted for Christ, you are no-
where to be found. You may even feel like Judas- a person who handed Jesus over to be crucified. If that is you, I have
great news- tonight you can recommit your life to Christ and start everything over.

Pass out note cards and give the students an opportunity to indicate if they made a decision for Christ that evening, then
close in prayer.
