Throughout my life I have had many obstacles that I had to overcome. When I was younger I was a very
quiet and shy person. Being shy was not a good thing for me because I would never interact during class and I
started to fall behind. It got to a point where even if I was confused and didn’t understand something I would
never ask anyone for help, not the teacher or any of the students. I was always afraid that if I raised my hand and
asked a question everyone would laugh and make fun of me because I didn’t know and everyone else did.
Throughout my years in school I continued to not ask any question and I was still confused. During class I
never ask for help. The way it affected me was that I didn’t learn what i was suppose to. Around the end of the
school year of my first grade year my teacher talked with my parents and explained to them that I was having
trouble and was very behind compared to the other students. She recommended them to let me stay another year
and repeat the first grade so that I could catch up. My parents refused to let me repeat the first grade and part of
the reason why they didn't want me to repeat was because I didn't really have many friends, I was always too shy
to talk to other kids and make friends and my parents were afraid that I would have to find new friends and that
Throughout the rest of my school years I was always behind and the reason why was because I never
bothered to ask any questions. I decided to just sit there in my seat confused. I would try and understand the
material on my own, but I would get very frustrated with myself because I would simply not understand what
was going on during class. My school decided to have a meeting with my parents and they came to a decision to
give me a counselor. The reason why was to try and work through my shyness. The counseling worked but it
didn't completely get me to be more outgoing, I was still shy just not as much. My parents also chose to get me
a mentor so that i would interact more with children and people. The mentor would take me to events and try to
make me talk with new people. The mentoring and counseling lasted all throughout my elementary school years
but once I got to middle school it stopped and i had to try and interact with people on my own.
Over my middle school years I started to talk more and try and ask for help if I was behind. My parents also
got me a tutor to try and catch me up to where i should be. I slowly got better and started to interact more during
class. I still have some difficulty in math but i did improve a lot with all the help the school gave me and what
my parents provided me with. I am very happy that they got me help because if they didn't I would have never
reached out to anyone for help and would most likely still be struggling in my classes and be behind and be
What I consider to be my strengths is that I am very determined. Ever since I started to improve in school
I have become more determined to succeed. School has never been easy for me. I have always had trouble
with school, but once I entered high school I made a decision to always do my best. My grades have
improved significantly from when I was in Middle school and I am very proud of that. Something that I have
noticed in myself is that the more that I improve and learn the more determined I become.
One of my dreams is to become a nurse. I love helping people and I love being around kids. I know that
if one day I become a nurse I will have to be a very kind and helping person. That is another one of my the
things that I consider to be my strengths. I believe that I am a very kind and caring person and that I will one
day become a nurse and those will be very important characteristics a nurse needs to have.
Another one the strengths I have is that I am respectful. I believe that everyone should be respectful and
respect others. Being respectful is a very important skill to have in life because that is one of the things people
notice first in a person. If you are not respectful towards others they also wont respect you and respect is one
understanding someone is important.I believe that you should always be reasonable and understanding
towards people. People may be have a bad day and you have to be able to understand that things happen and
know how to treat people and understand that acting a certain way towards them at that moment will not help
or do anything.
