Regional conference on Research In Architecture 2018-19, DYPSOA, Lohegaon, Pune - RIAB2019033

OVERVIEW :
• Waste generation is increasing and has become a major problem to the
health of people and their surrounding environment.
• Growth in population and with increasing demand has increased production
of waste leading to harmful environment conditions.
• Waste is categorized into several types such as domestic waste, municipal
waste, industrial waste, medical waste and construction waste.
• Different types of the wastes in the construction and demolition sites can
cause many problems for the society and also environment.
• With increasing demand for built spaces and scarcity of land, a trend of
redevelopment projects is upcoming.

NEED FOR RESEARCH :
• Construction industry produces maximum amount of toxic wastes. Waste
generated by all sites which is unavoidable.
• Pune is metropolitan city with many ongoing construction and redevelopment
projects that produce large amount of construction and demolition waste.
• Construction and demolition waste management in Pune is subject of concern in
construction market so there is need of managing waste.
AIM & OBJECTIVES :
• To examine the present current practices of construction and demolition waste
management and analyze the disposal pattern in the city of Pune.
• To study existing practice done for managing construction and demolition waste.
• To analyze the disposal pattern of construction and demolition waste.
• To focus on waste generated from residential projects and reduce it at source.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS : METHODOLOGY :
• The paper only covers
the construction and
demolition waste
management and
disposal in Pune city and
it limits to the RCC
framework type
residential project waste
management.
• It will only contain the
study of management
pattern and suggest
appropriate measures.

INTRODUCTION :
• Waste that generates from construction, renovation and demolition activities.
• Also include excess and damaged products and materials arising in the course
of construction work.
• Construction waste reports for nearly 65% of the overall investment in
infrastructure.
• Presently, C & D waste generation in India accounts up to175 million tonnes
annually.
• Waste are becoming a major problem in urban solid waste management.
• Environmental issues such as illegal disposal of waste into rivers and hill slopes,
resource depletion and shortage of landfills.
• Pune generates approximately 250 MT per day of construction and demolition
waste from various sources.

Regional conference on Research In Architecture 2018-19, DYPSOA, Lohegaon, Pune - RIAB2019033 5

• To address the C&D waste, Pune Municipal Corporation has prepared a Detail
Project Report DPR.
• Developed separate tenders for collection and transportation and also for
processing and disposal of construction and demolition waste
• PMC has already allocated 2 acres of land at Wagholi for construction and
demolition waste processing.
LITERATURE REVIEW :
 Definition of Waste Management :
Waste management are the activities and actions required to manage waste from
its inception to final disposal.
This also includes the collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of waste,
together with monitoring and regulation of waste management process.

 Construction Waste Management Hierarchy: CEMENT
CONCRETE
• The concept of 4R which refers to reduce, reuse, recycle and recovery
particularly in the context of production and consumption is well knownBRICKS
today.
• The best approach to manage construction waste is to minimize it at the source.

 Construction and demolition waste handling:

• In India, contractors play an important role in waste management.
• Items recovered are sold in the market at a discount to price of new material.
• Penal action against violators is practically not taken.
• Components are not separated.

 Management provisions of waste in project:

• In these projects there were no provisions for management of waste.
• Construction and demolition waste generated on these sites were disposed to
landfill site.
• Items like glass, tiles, doors, and metallic items such as railings, window bars
and reinforcement recovered during demolition are sold by demolition contractor.

CONCLUSIONS :
• In Pune, there has been less executed in the field of C & D waste management.
• Currently there is no system for collection and disposal of C & D waste.
• Types of waste generation diagrams shows that generation of debris is highest
contributor to waste generation.
• Soil, sand and gravel are second highest contributor to waste generation.
• Construction and demolition debris which consists of concrete, brick, ceramics,
soil/sand and gravel should be recycled to manufacture paver blocks.
• Location for C & D waste recycling plants should be developed in the city which
can help in minimization of C & D waste.
• 4 R’s policy and design for deconstruction and reuse of material from waste
should be adopted.
