INTEGRATION AND PROSPECTS IN THE MACEDONIAN
ELECTRICITY SYSTEM
Overview of the world situation

Renewable Energy Share of Global Electricity Production, end-2015

Overview of the world situation

304 GW

Installed PV capacity and forecast until 2020 worldwide

• 1975: 101.5 $/W => 2016: 0.447 $/W

• China: 43.3GW; Germany: 39.7GW
• In 2015, the US solar energy industry added more
jobs than oil and gas extraction industry altogether

Annual solar irradiation:

• Minimum:1250 kWh/m2
• Maximum:1530 kWh/m2
• Average:1385 kWh/m2

Daily solar irradiation:

from 3.4 to 4.2 kWh/m2

Feed-in tariffs and limitations

April 2013, RM Official Gazette

Total installed capacity on a national level for granted feed-in tariffs:

• 4 MW for PV power plants with rated power smaller than 50 kW, and
• 14 MW for PV power plants with rated power greater than 50 kW, but
smaller than 1 MW.

11.07.2013
Energy Regulatory Commission announces that the quotas for PV
power plants installed capacity are fulfilled.

Feed-in tariffs:
• 46 €c/kWh for P  50kW (2010) and 16 €c/kWh (2013)
• 41 €c/kWh for P  50kW (2010) and 12 €c/kWh (2013)
Feed-in tariffs and limitations

Additional expenses arising from feed-in tariffs for PV power plants

“…the difference between the costs of purchases of power from RE producers

under feed-in tariffs and the market price of power is collected in form of a
surcharge on the transmission tariff from end-use electricity consumers in
proportion to consumption, i.e. a charge per kWh consumed”
Prospects of PV systems in Maceodnia

Strategy for Energy Development in Macedonia until 2030:

• Baseline scenario (BS) - the final energy consumption is estimated
to grow with an average annual grade of 2.64%;
• Strengthened energy efficiency scenario (EEf) - the average growth
rate is calculated to be 2.2%.

2006 2020

Electricity consumption + 2.5%/y or +2%/y

Participation of RES in total primary energy 11.5% 13.3%
Coal thermal plants in electricity production 49.19% 42%
Prospects of PV systems in Maceodnia

Strategy for Renewable Energy Sources Utilization by 2020:

• 10 to 30 MW of installed PV plants by 2020 → 14 to 42 GWh/y

• 20 to 40 MW of installed PV plants by 2030 → 28 to 56 GWh/y

Estimation of the installed capacity of PV systems and electrical energy produced

Prospects of PV systems in Macedonia

• By 2035, total installed PV capacity: 120MW (BS) and 190MW (EEf), i.e.
total electrical energy produced from PV plants: around 170 GWh;

Estimated 20 million euro private capital to achieve the predictions!

Third Action Plan for Energy Efficiency (2016):

• micro PV systems up to 3 kW by individual households, and the extra
electrical energy produced to be injected into the power grid
• single household: 2 kW PV system → 2.5MWh/y
Crucial areas for action

• legal and regulatory framework

- the electricity company is obliged to receive the excess of
energy produced by PV system producers

• market development
- product standards, “soft” interventions: education,
campaigns…

• entrepreneurship and business acceleration

- programms for technical assistance for the local companies

• technology development
- R&D credits and grants
Conclusion

• Total number of privileged electricity producers from PV systems

(2015): 101

• Total installed PV capacity (2015): 6.66 MW

• Contribution to the total installed capacity: 0.81%

• Strategy for RES Utilization:

- by 2020: 10 – 30 MW installed PV capacity
14 – 42 GWh/y electrical energy production

- by 2030: 20 – 40 MW installed PV capacity

28 – 56 GWh/y electrical energy production
