3 UNDERGROUND SYSTEMS

3.1 STORMWATER SYSTEM

3.1.1 General
The stormwater drainage system shall be designed to ensure that no flooding or ponding of
stormwater occurs for the design rainfall intensity.

Unless more stringent requirements are imposed by relevant authorities, design rainfall
intensity to be considered for sizing of surface drainage systems shall correspond to a rainfall
return period of 50 years. These curves shall be sourced from competent public authorities
(meteorological service or public weather stations) either directly or from manipulation of

raw rainfall data. Alternatively, published and well documented intensity-duration curves
may be used provided they are applicable to the site.

Station and road levels shall be established such as to provide a minimum longitudinal slope
of 1% for drainage. Where stormwater disposal is to a natural water course or existing sewer
system, contractor shall obtain all required environmental and local authority and operator
permits for that purpose.

3.1.2 Design requirements

Pipe diameters shall be selected such as they flow no more than 75% full at design runoff,
while channel cross-sections shall be selected considering at least 100 mm freeboard at
design flow. The minimum slope of stormwater pipes shall be 0.50% and for stormwater
channels 0.25% and the flow velocities shall be kept within the range 0.60 m/sec and 3.0
m/sec.

The minimum pipe cover, measured from top of pipe, shall be 800 mm, excluding catch
basin outlet conduits. The buried pipes shall be selected and designed to withstand all
imposed loads, such as, traffic loads, construction equipment loads and backfill loads. Design
and pipe selection shall be in conformance with the requirements of BS EN 1295 and BS EN
1916 respectively.

3.1.3 Materials
Contractor shall submit to the company representative for approval material certificates
issued by bodies certified to BS EN 45011.

Pipes for underground stormwater sewer networks shall be either precast reinforced
concrete pipes conforming to BS EN 1916 or rigid plastic pipes conforming to BS EN 1401
requirements. For all pipes joint seals shall be watertight vulcanised rubber seals conforming
to the requirements of BS EN 681-01.

Manholes, manhole slab covers and catch basins shall be precast reinforced concrete units
complying with BS EN 1917 and BS EN 13369 or cast in Situ Concrete. Manhole tops and gully

tops located in areas of heavy traffic shall be class D400 to BS EN 124. Minimum class for all
other areas shall be C250 to BS EN 124.

3.2 OILY WATER SYSTEM

This system shall collect the possible oily spillage from storage tanks areas, platforms
supporting process equipment, pump houses and rainwater from possible spills from paved
areas. This network will be realized with pipes of suitable diameter and thickness, catch
basins and manholes and shall be connected to the existing plant oily network.

To avoid fire propagation between the plant sections, adequate sealing with siphons shall be
provided inside each pit, either upstream or downstream of the pit itself.

3.3 SANITARY EFFLUENTS DRAINAGE SYSTEM

Sanitary waste from buildings (effluents from sinks, wash basins, showers and urinals) will be
conveyed untreated to septic tanks which eventually will be drained to the existing Plant
Waste Water Treatment Unit.

4 CONSTRUCTION

4.1 EXCAVATION
Pipe trenches shall be excavated to minimum width such as to provide adequate working
space to permit jointing of pipes and tampering of fill around the pipe. To this respect, the
minimum trench width shall be 600 mm.

Contractor shall provide adequate shoring of trench walls to ensure side-wall stability when
required. Shoring of trench excavations with vertical walls and a depth greater than 1.80 m
in soft soil is mandatory.

Contractor shall take measures to remove any surface or ground water entering the
excavation. Water shall be removed by pumping or gravity and shall be discharged to natural
drainage paths. The laying of pipe or manhole construction under water is not allowed.

4.2 BEDDING
Bedding shall have a minimum thickness of 200mm beneath the pipe. Bedding material for
buried pipes shall be quarry sand to BS EN 13242 with 0/2mm or 0/4mm grading.

4.3 PIPE LAYING

Placement of pipe should start at the outlet end of the line of pipe sections. The bell end
should point upstream and the spigot or tongue should point downstream. This helps
prevent bedding material from being forced into the bell during joining and enables easier
and watertight coupling of pipe sections.

During lowering-in care shall be exercised in order to avoid pipe impact and shock due to
collision to the trench walls or bedding.

4.4 JOINTING
Joints shall be made sufficiently watertight to prevent excessive infiltration or leak. Before
joining the pipe segments the spigot, bell and rubber shall be thoroughly cleaned. After
lubricating the ring, the pipe segments shall be carefully aligned and jointed in a way
ensuring a continuous and smooth invert level.

Pipe connections to manholes and catch basins shall be sealed with 50mm of pre-packed,
non-shrink, cement mortar on the perimeter of the conduit.

4.5 PADDING
Padding material around the pipe sides and at least up to 200 mm above the pipe crown
shall be fine quarry sand 0/2mm or 0/4mm grading to BS EN 13242 and shall commence as
soon as jointing is completed.

Padding shall be placed on both sides of the conduit in a balanced way such as to avoid
movement of the bedded pipe.

4.6 BACKFILLING
The remainder of the trench shall be backfilled as follows:

In road and paved areas the whole backfilling shall be selected road sub-base and base
courses compacted to 98% Proctor Density to BS EN 13286-02. Backfilling shall be executed
in sequential layers with 20cm maximum compacted thickness each. All layers will be
moisture conditioned in order to achieve the required degree of compaction. Compaction of
all layers shall be carried out by light compaction equipment, such as vibratory plates, small
vibratory rollers, etc. to avoid damaging the pipes until the required degree of compaction is
achieved.

In non-paved areas backfilling material shall consist of selected excavation material

compacted to 95% Proctor Density according to BS EN 13286-02 in layers of 30cm maximum
compacted thickness each.

5 INSPECTION AND TESTING

All drainage works shall be supervised and checked by a qualified civil engineer. Each
segment of the underground pipe shall be tested for leakage. For that purpose pipe
segments between manholes or other structures shall be sealed and filled with water to a
head not less than 1.50m above the pipe crown. After toping up and allowing for water
absorption in pipes and joints the head shall be held for 24 hours. Leakage shall not exceed
0.75 litres per hour per meter of internal diameter per meter of pipe run.
