Act 2 Scene 2
[Romeo enters]
Romeo: It’s easy for someone to joke about scars if they’ve never been cut.
[Juliet enters on the balcony]
Romeo: But wait, what light through yonder window breaks? There she is! I wonder if she knows how I feel.
Does she know how beautiful she is? Ah, I’ve never seen anything that could be more perfect!
Juliet: ugh! (direct)
Romeo: [whispers to himself] What! Did she hear me?
Juliet: [not knowing Romeo hears her] Oh, Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? But why do you have
to be Romeo? Just change your school. If you won’t, just tell me you love me and I’ll stop going to Capulet.
Romeo: [to himself] I can’t believe I’m eavesdropping. I feel like I’m in 4th grade. But I have to know. [listens
intentionally]
Juliet: [still not knowing Romeo can hear her] It’s only the school that you go to that makes you my enemy.
You would still be you if you stopped going to Montague...but what does that name mean anyways? The thing
that we call a rose would smell just as sweet if we called it by any other name. This would be so much easier if
we just went to the same school! He should change it, and in exchange for me.
Romeo: [to Juliet] Just tell me you love me, and I’ll switch schools, heck, I’d even change my name. I will
never be Romeo again. I trust you.
Juliet: Who are you? Were you listening in on me? [smirks] you can’t fool me. Tell me who you are!
Romeo: Guilty as charged, you caught me... but I don’t know how to tell you who I am, by just telling you my
name. You see, then you’d know what school I go to, and that makes us enemies, which I really don’t want to
be.
Juliet: I recognize your voice. Aren’t you Romeo? Don’t you go to Montague?
Romeo: If that’s a problem I can be someone else.
Juliet: How did you get in here? Why did you come? The walls around the house are high and hard to climb
up. If my family sees you, you can be sure someone will get hurt!
Romeo: Those walls can’t keep my feelings out. And I’m not too worried about your family.
Juliet: If they see you, they’ll hurt you.
Romeo: An angry look from you would hurt worse than your whole family coming after me.
Juliet: ...I wouldn’t let them see you anyway.
Romeo: It’s to dark, so don’t stress about it. But hey, if you don’t love me, let them find me. I’m not afraid of
being caught, I just don’t want to be without you.
Juliet: Who told you how to get here?
Romeo: [jokes] Well your the only house with a big ol’ll tower...
Juliet: [gives him an angry look]
Romeo: No one. Love showed me the way. Love told me what to do and I followed. Just tell me what to do,
and I’ll do it.
Juliet: [stands blushing] Do you really love me? If you say yes, I’ll believe you. But prove that you love me, and
say it like you mean it.
Romeo: I swear by the moon, that makes everything turn into a silver- [gets cut off by Juliet ]
Juliet: No! Don’t swear to the moon. Its always changing. I don’t want you to be inconsistent too.
Romeo: Then what should I swear by?
Juliet: Nothing. If you have to, swear to yourself. Then I’ll believe you.
Romeo: In my heart’s dear love- [gets cut off by Juliet again]
Juliet: Don’t swear! You make me happy- [phone vibrates] Whoa, I didn’t realize the time. I have to go. Good
night, Romeo. We have a good thing going, let’s not ruin it.
Romeo: So, wait, your just going to leave?
Juliet: Why would I stay?
Romeo: To talk about feelings, duh?
Juliet: I already promised you my love, but I can’t take it back.
Romeo: Why would you want to?
Juliet: So I could tell you myself. Not hear-say.
[Nurse calls for Juliet]
Juliet: Shh... I heard something.
[Juliet leaves]
Romeo: [whispers to himself] Does she really feel the same?
[Juliet comes back]
Juliet: Romeo, if you really want my hand in marriage, let me know.
Romeo: But how?
Juliet: You’ll find a way. [smiles]
Nurse: Juliet!
Juliet: [to Nurse] I’ll be right there! [to Romeo] Romeo, don’t lead me on. If you know now that we won’t be
able to be together forever, tell me now.
Nurse: [cutting off Juliet] Juliet!
Juliet: I’m coming! I’m coming!
[Juliet leaves]
[Romeo starts to leave. Juliet returns]
Juliet: Pst! Romeo! My house is nearly a prison, I have to be quiet.
Romeo: [smiles] Miss me already?
Juliet: [jokes] Oh shut it! Should I text you tomorrow?
Romeo: Yeah, before 9 o’clock.
Juliet: Okay. [sigh] If I have to wait that long.
Juliet: You should go. It’s almost morning.
[Juliet exits]
Romeo: I shall meet with my priest to tell him the good news.
[Romeo exits]
Act 2 Scene 3
Act 2 Scene 4
Nurse: Romeo, who was that obnoxious guy? No offense, but with all those jokes, he’s a pig.
Romeo: [snickers] He’s just one of those guys who likes the sound of his own voice. He says more in one
minute than most people say in a whole month.
Nurse: I swear, if he comes in here and talks like that to me one more time, I’ll kick him! I don’t care how
strong he is or how many friends he’s got, I’ll do it, Who does he think he is, comin’ in here and thinkin’ he can
say whatever he wants to me...(to Peter) and you! You just stand there and let every jerk make fun of me for
kicks.
Peter: Nobody was using you for kicks. But if they did, I’d stand up for you, trust me.
Nurse: [throws hands up in the air] Ugh! I’m so angry! (to Romeo) Now can I talk to you? Juliet asked me to
find you. I’m not gunna tell you what she told me to say, but let me tell you this first. If you think about tricking
her, you can bet that you’ll pay the consequences. She’s just a girl, and that’d be pretty low, even for you.
Romeo: I swear I won’t- (gets cut off)
Nurse: You have a good heart, and trust me, I’ll let her know that. She’ll be so happy...
Romeo: What’re you going to tell her?
Nurse: Well, I’ll tell her that you protest to her, which I think is a good thing to do...
Romeo: Tell her to find a way to sneak out and come to Friar Lawrence’s cell so she can make confession and
be married. (giving her coins) Take this as thank you, from me.
Nurse: Oh, you don’t need to do that. I won’t except it.
Romeo: Please, I want you to.
Nurse: Romeo...
Romeo: Go on, I insist.
Nurse: (taking the money) This afternoon? She’ll be there.
Romeo: Wait, in an hour, one of my boys will give you a rope ladder, so I can climb over the walls at night and
see Juliet. I’ll repay you for your help, I promise. Goodbye.
Nurse: Wait a sec, I have one more thing to say.
Romeo: What is it?
Nurse: Your guy won’t turn me in for helping you, will he?
Romeo: Don’t worry, he won’t tell.
Nurse: Well, Juliet is a sweet girl, she deserves to be happy...but just a warning. You’re not the only one who’s
interested. A guy named Paris would take her as his own in a heartbeat. Juliet would rather look at a toad than
choose him...Just giving you a heads up.
Romeo: Thanks.
Nurse: No problem. Peter! (gives Peter her fan) Go ahead. Go quickly.
[They all exit]
Act 2 Scene 5
Juliet: I sent the Nurse at nine o'clock. Maybe she can’t find him...i doubt it. She’s so slow! To bad we can’t
just send thoughts. It’s already noon! That’s three hours since nine o'clock, and she’s still gone! If she just
knew how important this was to me, she’d be flying over here! [sigh]
[The Nurse and Peter enter]
Juliet: Finally! Sooo, Have you spoken to him? What did you find out?! Peter, could you step out for a second?
Nurse: Peter, wait for me outside.
[Peter exits]
Juliet: What happened, you look unhappy. If the news is sad, tell me with a smile on your face. If it’s good
news, you’re definitely ruining the moment by playing a trick with a sour face like that.
Nurse: Chill out. Let me rest for a minute. Gosh, I hurt everywhere...I’ve been running all over the place!
Juliet: Oh, I’m sorry, you know I would take away the pain for you if I could, but come on now, spill!
Nurse: You’re in such a hurry! Can’t you wait for a moment? Can’t you see I’m out of breath?
Juliet: How can you be out of breath when you have enough breath to tell me you’re out of breath?!.. [cooing]
Please, just tell me. Is it good or bad?
Nurse: Well, I think you haven’t made the best decision. You don’t know how to pick a man. Romeo? No, not
him. Though his face is more handsome than any man’s, but he’s not the most polite man in the world, but,
he’s got a good heart. Do what you want. Have you had lunch yet?
Juliet: [frustrated] No, I haven’t had lunch! Everything you told me I already knew. What does he say about our
marriage? What about that?
Nurse: [ignoring Juliet] Wow, I have a headache! My head is pounding. My back aches too. Why’d you have to
send me running all over town anyway? I could get sick and die.
Juliet: I’m sorry you’re in pain. But please, tell me, what did Romeo say?
Nurse: He says, like an honest gentleman, and a courteous, and a kind, and a handsome, and, I warrant, a
virtuous— Where is your mother?
Juliet: I don’t know...the kitchen?! Correct me if I’m wrong, but you just said “Your love says, like an honest
gentleman, 'Where is your mother?'” Now...that doesn't quite seem like the answer I’ve been practically
begging for...
Nurse: Goodness child! Are you always this impatient? You’re being ridiculous! This is definitely not what my
headache needs... From now on, take care of your messages yourself.
Juliet: Oh stop complaining.
Nurse: Do you have permission to go out and take confession today?
Juliet: Yup.
Nurse: Hurry up and rush over to Friar Lawrence’s cell. There’s a husband there
waiting to make you his wife. [smiles] Go to the church. I’m going to get a rope ladder. Romeo will use it to
climb up to your window while it’s dark. Don’t worry, I’ll do the hard work so you can be happy. But soon you’ll
be the wife. Go.
Juliet: Wish me luck! Thanks Nurse!
