Where I’m From

I am from medicine bottles and laptops.

I am from the wooden desk in the study room.

(It always made me feel smart.)

I am from the sakura tree

The cherry blossom orchard

Whose long limbs I remember

As if they were my own.

I’m from sugar cookies and reading glasses,

From Nancy and Anne.

I’m from the fast eaters and late-night studiers,

From hold your head up high to don’t be arrogant!

I’m from London Bridge is Falling Down

And “The Swing” by Robert Louis Stevenson.

I’m from James and Amy Branch,

Tiramisu cake and boba milk tea.

From the stitches on my father’s arms

From the biking crash,

My grandparents’ struggle for immigration.

Underneath my bed was a diary

Papers bursting from its binding,

Faded memories of old friends and family

Ones who I once held dear to my heart

And made me who I am.
