In order to prevent:
- poor combustion
To protect the injection equipment against rapid temperatures changes, which may cause
sticking/scuffing of the fuel valves and of the fuel pump plungers, change-over is to be
carried out as follows (manually):
Ensure that heavy oil in fuel oil service tank is at normal temperature level (i.e. about 85
°C)
1. By means of the steam valve to steam tracing line of A/E fuel oil service system, and
by manual control of the viscosity regulator DO to be heated maximum 65-70 °C (see
bunker spec.) by opening steam valve 15% on viscosity controller on MANUAL mode.
NOTE:
Light Diesel Oil viscosity should not drop below 2 cSt, as this might cause fuel pump and
fuel valve scuffing, with the risk of sticking, due to failing lubrication ability of Light Diesel
Oil.
For some Light Diesel Oils (Gas Oil), this will limit the upper temperature to somewhat
below 60 °C.
Heavy fuel oil temperature in fuel oil service tank must not be more than 25 °C higher than
the heated Light Diesel Oil in the system ( 65-70 °C) at the time of change-over.

2. When temperature requirements have been fulfilled, i.e. Diesel Oil temperature reach to
65-70 °C, perform change over to HFO by opening valve 105V on LSHFO SERVICE tk.
or 102V on HFO service tk. and change-over to HFO by three way valve 141V with later
closing valve 142V (DO suction).
3. Temperature rise is continued at a rate of about 2 °C per minute, until required
viscosity is obtained (10 – 15 cSt). Slowly fuel oil temperature increasing is to
reduce stress on fuel pumps (viscosity not to be lower than 2-3 cSt).
2. Isolate steam on fuel strainers and heating lines. Leave steam for fuel heater
open as steam can be regulated from ECR by push button on visco-controller
in MANUAL mode.
