Is the current invasion of sargussum seaweeds bad for the Caribbean and can the blame be put
on climate change.
Sargussum is a genus of brown macroalgae in the in the order Fucales. Numerous species are
distributed throughout the temperature and tropical oceans of the world where they generally
inhabit shallow water and coral reefs and genus is widely known for its planktonic species.
Climate change could pose disadvantageous risks to the islands in the Caribbean. The
environmental changes expected to affect the Caribbean are a rise in sea level, stronger
hurricanes, longer dry seasons and shorter wet seasons. Sargasso is not uncommon in these
regions. Sargasso forms putrid barriers along the coastline, preventing access to the Caribbean
Sea, and as decomposition sets in the noxious smell because the overwhelming and harmful
levels of hydrogen sulfide emitted from these decomposing algae are even enough to cause
detriments to human health.
