Introduction
A pre-feasibility survey of the Onuaku SHP Project was conducted on December 1 – 2, 2011. The
survey revealed that about 55kW could be generated from the Aku river using Run-of-the-river
Scheme SHP type which was not adequate for the community, hence a Dam-toe SHP Scheme
was recommended. The Onuaku community after receiving the report of the survey agreed to
this and requested that a detailed survey of the project be carried out as soon as possible. On
February 7, 2012, the NASENI SHP team led by Engr. E.A. Ajani arrived at Onuaku Community in
Isuikwato L.G.A. of Abia state for the Detailed Survey of the SHP plant.
Survey Team
The survey team consisted of the following:
Site Survey
The survey team which arrived at Onuaku Community at about 3pm on Tuesday
February 7, 2012 headed straight for the proposed SHP site, before retiring to their
lodge, where they had their first meeting on work scheduling and survey plan.
On Wednesday February 8, 2012 a load survey of the community was carried out
involving household, industrial social and commercial loads. Three survey teams were
constituted namely:
The report of the load survey findings was submitted to the project manager by dawn.
On Thursday February 9th 2012, the survey team visited the proposed SHP site to collect
necessary data for the dam design and construction after a meeting was held with Engr.
Mike Nwachukwu a Deputy Director from Anambra-Imo River Basin Development
Authority, an expert in Dam design and construction. Prof. Victor Nwaugo, an Expert on
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) led a team largely made up of staff and
students of the Environmental Studies Department of the Abia State University to
collect data for the EIA. Calculations based on findings from the survey were made and
the dam size with of capacity of 63 million cubic metres was estimated for the
catchment area with a dam crest of 23m high, a 2m freeboard and a maximum head of
21meters. With a design discharge of 5m3/s the SHP plant installed capacity of about
700kW was estimated.
On Friday February 10, 2012, based on the head, flow and maintenance cost, two (2)
units of Kaplan Turbine each of 350kW capacity was selected for the site.
The compilation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being compiled. The printed and
bound document which will also contain the Bill of Engineering Measurements and
Evaluation (BEME) would be published within the next two weeks.
Conclusion
The Onuaku SHP Project will bring a lot of benefit to the community ranging from power
generation to community water supply and irrigation, which will eventually
metamorphose into economic growth and improvement in the standard of living of the
Onuaku indigenes and the country at large.
