The Odu that speak about how Erindinlogum came into existence is Oyeku Ogunda. Though

other Odu mentioned it but we shall focus on is Oyeku Ogunda. This is the story of how

erindinlogun cowries reading begin:

Igbonmo ko se kam aya kekeke

Lodifa fun orunmila nigbati Aboseere ni mogun

Aboyaya ni mogba

Abobatanla batarisa nigba aadota.

Ofikan se imuse,

Finkinfikin awo Osanyin orun Korea Je ki orunmila ri nkan se mo

Won ni ki orunmila rubo ki iponju 're le did ero,

Orunmila rubo , oko, ad a, ati obuko.

Araye e wa wo orunmila ti nro oko ati ada ta lati jeun

Translation

You can't beat your chest with one little finger,

is the one that divine for Orunmila

on the day aboseere ni mogun,

Aboyaya ni mogbon,

abobatala, batarisa nigba aadota ( 50)

and ofinkinfikin the awo of osanyin orun,

they block orunmila blessing and prosperity.

Orunmila was ask to perform sacrifice so that poverty will not kill him.
Orunmila sacrifices hoe, cutlass, and one he-goat and he started smithing hoe and cutlass

and sell to people.

There are plenty Awo in Ile Ife in those days. Some of them are very wicked, some learned

awo, some fake awo, some half-baked awo. All these awo have different method of attracting

clients to themselves and they stop people from going to Orunmila place for reading and

sacrifice. Orunmila become poor because of this and there is no food to eat. Orunmila

consulted Ifa and Oyeku Ogunda came out, He was asked to make sacrifice and he performed

the sacrifice. Orunmila established an iron Smith work, by producing local hoe and cutlass.

Orunmila’s wife is the one that was helping him to sell in the market. Whenever she sell a

hoe or cutlass at 50 and she will report to Orunmila with 20. One day, Orunmila wife sold a

cutlass to a farmer on credit. The farmer paid her 20 and promised to balance before next

market. The farmer brought the money home for Oorunmila’s wife before the next market.

He met Orunmila alone at home. He told Orunmila that his wife sold a cutlass for him at 50

and he only paid 20 and he is here to balance 30 to complete the money. At this junction,

Orunmila now realised that his wife has been cheating on him. He was angry and when his

wife returned home, Orunmila draw cutlass and removed his wife’s head. Orunmila ran away

after committing murder and hid himself inside a tree called oriri. Sobosigi (Osun) of Ile Ife

went to forest in order to fetch wood, and came to oriri tree. She draw her cutlass to cut oriri

tree and Orunmila shouted: “Please, don't cut the tree, I’m inside.” The woman Sobosigi

stopped and wanted to make noise that, here is Orunmila the murderer. Orunmila begged her

to help and they form an awo that she should not tell anybody. Orunmila gave her 16 cowries.

She took the cowries and went to Olofin palace and divine for Olofin that Orunmila will be

found if they can perform sacrifice. However, during Orunmila’s absence, Olofin there was

problem in the town.

There was already problem in Ile Ife which needed Orunmila’s attention. Sobosigi divined with

the 16 cowries and brought back Orunmila to Olofin palace.


Sobosigi is the name of Osun. Osun praise Erindinlogun, Erindinlogun praise Orunmila and

Orunmila praise ifá and Olodumare.

That is the story of how Erindinlogun came to Sobosigi (Osun). Osun was celebrating festival,

according to this odu, Soponaa, Sango, and Sala are children of Osun. They came to celebrate

with their mother and Osun washed Erindinlogun and gave them as gift to do reading and to

call on her anytime

According to this odu, it was written so that Sango, Soponaa, Sala are children of Osun. Note,

we have plenty Sango, Soponaa, Esu, Ogun after the original Orisa. This is from the odu

Oyeku Ogunda as written by first writer of Ifá book Lijadu
