Basic Guidelines for WiFi Testing

1. Device used for Testing (Mobile /Laptop) must be within the Access Point radiating range. Signal strength should be at least -60dBm
for proper usage.

2. Speed received while Testing depends on various site related factors like Backhaul Bandwidth, No. of Users connected, distance from
Access Points, Signal strength, Device capacity, Interference, User Plan, etc.

3. While Testing on Mobile, always ensure that Mobile Data is disabled. This will help in avoiding incorrect observations.

4. Verify if the Testing is happening on device that is latched to Outdoor AP. whereas the Outdoor Access Points are having a Semi Omni-
directional antenna and hence more care needs to be given regarding the signal strength at the location of Testing

5. Carryout Speed Testing wherever required only using the BSNL authorized speed testing site speedtest.bsnl.co.in. This site is allowed
access from WiFi Hotspot locations without authentication.

6. Once the device is connected to one of the WiFi Network SSID and then disconnected, ensure that there is a minimum time of 2
minutes that is given before reconnection to the SSID in accordance with the Timeout configured in the network.

7. Ensure that only 1 connection is attempted using a Mobile No. / Broadband User ID at any given point of time on the WiFi Network.
Simultaneous usage and Multiple sessions are disabled in the WiFi deployment.

Hotspot Deployment Related Guidelines

1. The No. of Access Points deployed in a site should be based on proper Site Survey done before deployment.

2. The Access Point Coverage and Design report taken as part of the Site Survey for the location will help in
identifying the coverage area and ideal place for conducting Testing.
3. The Access Points should NOT be installed at more than 10 Meters of height from the ground ideally.
4. The Access Points should NOT be placed in locations where their coverage is hampered by Walls, Partitions, HT
Electrical Cables, etc.
5. Proper Visible Labelling of all devices with Hostname & IP Address details to be carried out as part of the
Installation.
6. Outdoor Access Points need to be properly Earthed to avoid failures and for proper operations.
7. Outdoor Access Points must be installed in Vertical position only.
8. The deployment & Network diagram for all the Hotspot locations should be available to identify the issues during
the O&M.

Checklist for BSNL WiFi SSID and Captive Portal redirection.

1. Check if the customer is connected to BSNL WiFi SSID

2. Verify whether IP Address is assigned to the subscriber from WiFi network
3. User should be redirected to Captive Portal Webpage (https://welcome1.bsnlfi.bsnl.co.in)
4. If Not, check whether in Browser address bar shows Captive Portal URL
5. If Browser address bar doesn’t show Captive Portal URL, then enter any URL in browser manually so that it
gets redirected.
6. Preferable browsers are Mozilla Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer.
7. Check if subscriber can open speedtest.bsnl.co.in and verify the speed. This site is allowed access from
WiFi Hotspot locations without authentication.
8. Check if only one subscriber or device is facing issues at site or all the subscribers are facing it. Verify the
same test using different device or subscriber credentials to be sure.
9. If issue still persists then contact concerned person with details of Mobile Number, Device MAC Address, IP
Address, Device Make & Model, OS Version and Date / Time of Issue.
10.In case of successful Login to BSNL WiFi, but NOT able to browse the Internet, contact concerned person
with details of Mobile Number, IP Address and Date / Time of Issue.

Basic Troubleshooting steps and guidelines

1. Verify whether the user is connected to BSNL SSID at the time of observation or NOT. Ensure that the user is connected to
the desired SSID while testing
2. Ensure the location where Testing is carried out is having enough coverage of WiFi. Signal strength should be at least -
60dBm for proper usage. The WiFi coverage could be checked using Mobile Applications that are downloadable freely (Eg:
WiFi Analyzer).
3. While Testing on Mobile, always ensure that Mobile Data is disabled. This will help in avoiding incorrect observations.
4. Verify whether the IP Address is allocated to User / device. The same could be checked by looking at the WiFi properties.
Kindly make a note of the IP Address allocated during observation. This could be required for further troubleshooting by
NOC / OEM Teams.
5. Once the device is connected to WiFi Network, check if subscriber can open speedtest.bsnl.co.in and verify the speed.
This site is allowed access from WiFi Hotspot locations without authentication. If enough speed is observed in this
testing, it is an indicator that there are no site issues or uplink issues for the site.
6. In case speed recorded is less from speedtest.bsnl.co.in, carryout a Ping Test from the PoE Switch to the Default Gateway
IP Address (Multiplay BNG) and verify for Packet Loss or Latency issues to ensure there are NO uplink related issues for
the site.
7. Also, check whether in the hotspot site, all users are facing redirection problem, or some are working fine, and few are
facing problems.
