UG DESIGN LAB PROPOSAL

Amit Ray
Department of Design
Objective

DES 211 ‘Creativity & Concept in Design’ will be introduced as a compulsory course for
the SoE from the Monsoon 2018 Semester. It is a Product Design Course that envisages to
developing an understanding of the basic Design Process. The course would introduce the
students to conceptualize and fabricate the products. It will provide hands-on experience
by handling various materials and fabrication process, such as- wood, metal, plastics,
acrylics, polymer, cardboard, ‘sun-board’ with the help of lathe-machine, welding-
machine, wood-planning, drilling, Moulding and casting, etc.

The Lab should have basic Electronic Components facilities to support their in-house
product development projects.

They would also gain knowledge in basic Engineering Graphics (Drawings). The students
will be given direct training in various fabrication techniques.

Keeping in mind with the above training, the course needs dedicated Design Lab
for handling approximately 175-200 students in each semester. It requires the
following infrastructure facilities to support the course activities-

1. A descent space for 20-25 students working for fabrication of the projects. The space
should be able to accommodate four (04) ‘Work-bench’ fitted with Bench-Vices, Bench-
drilling Machine, Sheet metal cutting shear- machine, etc.
2. Work-Bench- 04
3. A 4’ ft.(W) X 10’ ft.(L) X 3 ft. (H) low table for drawing/ paper work
4. 30 Plastic Chairs
5. Wielding Machine 15,000/-
6. Pipe/rod bending Machine 140,000/-
7. Jigsaw Machine 10,000/-
8. Sheet bending Machine 38,000/-
9. Belt sander +motor 22,000/-
10. Vices – 40,000/-
11. Universal vice- 28,000/- A. (Mechanical)=Rs. 300,000.00

Hand-held Tools:

Drill, Hot air gun, grinding machine, glue guns, Screw Driver, Wrenches, Hack-Saw, Wood
Saw, Etc.

B. Mechanical Hand-tools= Rs. 50,000.00

Alongwith the Mechanical Equipment & Tools, the UGDS requires to build basic
Electronics Facilities for the project fabrications. In recent times the application of
electronics has increased rapidly. Therefore, providing in-house basic electronic facility is
necessary-
