Philippine Theater Groups

I. OBJECTIVES
A. General
The learner demonstrates understanding of theater and performance as synthesis of arts.

B. Specific
At the end of the lesson, students shall be able to:
1. identify the different performing groups in the Philippine Theater,
2. present a short scene comprised of some genre in theater play, and
3. appreciate the importance of Performing Theater Groups.

Review
Names of students will be randomly picked to answer questions about the topics discussed from
previous discussions.
 Who are the people who have the major roles in theater production?
 What are their roles?

Priming
“Instagrammable Hugot”

The teacher will group the students according to the color of the candy that they will get from the
candy jar. The group 1-green, group 2-red and group 3-blue. Each group will have an instagram post,
what they are going to do is to make hugot caption for the instagram post after the presentation by
raising their “like and dislike emoji”. The teacher will be given them 5 mins to prepare and 2 mins
for the presentation.

C. Activity
“Puzzle UP”
The teacher will divide the class into three (3) groups. Representative of each group will draw a
piece of paper with a name of theater group written on it (Philippine Educational Theater
Association, Tanghalang Pilipino and Atlantis). For each group, the teacher will be giving pictures
about the theater group they have chosen. Each group will create a documentary presentation (vlog,
exhibit presentation or promotion) regarding the theater group they have chosen using the pictures
and some brief facts provided to them.

Brief Facts:

 PETA is a theatrical association of artists and educators


 Performs to enlighten Filipino youth
 Have performed 400 plays

 Tanghalang Pilipino is the leading exponent of Philippine theater and the resident
drama company of the CCP
 It is dedicated in training and developing Philippine theater actors
 It is also engaged in workshops, symposiums and interactions

 Atlantis Productions Incorporated staged the hit Broadway musical “Rent”
performed in Singapore and Manila.
 Some of the shows that were brought to life by Atlantis Productions are Jesus
Christ Superstar, Dream Girls, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and the Little
Mermaid.

D. Analysis
1. What did you feel about the theater group assigned to you while you are arranging the
pictures to create a presentation?
2. Which of the theater groups presented did you appreciate most? Why?
3. Based from the presentation made by each group, how can you compare the different
theater groups?

E. Abstraction
 What is the vision of Philippine Educational Theater Association?
 What is the main goal of the performances being acted by PETA?
 What are some significant contributions of Tanghalang Pilipino in the field of Philippine
performing arts?
 What are the usual themes being performed by Tanghalang Pilipino?
 Characterize Atlantis theater group based from their profile.
 How can you describe the performances done by the Atlantis theater group?
(The teacher will play short video clips of the performances of each group: PETA,
Tanghalang Pilipino and Atlantis).
 Based from what you have seen from the video, how can you compare the performances of
the three theater groups?
 Why do you think we need to study the different performing groups in Philippine theater?
 Why do you think we have to pay attention and support to the Philippine Theater Group or
theater companies?

F. Application
“Lights, Camera and Action”

The teacher will play a short video clip portraying a short scene of one of the movies of Philippine
cinema. Each group will be instructed to act out the scene in the style of the performance of the
theater group assigned to them. Students will be given five minutes to prepare and three minutes
for the presentation.
Students will be guided by the following rubric/criteria for assessment of group presentation:

IV. EVALUATION
Directions: Match the description about the different theater groups with the theater groups written in the
box. Write the letter of the correct answer.
