Pericycle
The pericy cle is a cy linder of parenchy ma or sclerenchy ma cells that lies just inside the endodermis and is the
outer most part of the stele of plants.

Although it is composed of non-v ascular parenchy ma cells, it's still considered part of the v ascular cy linder because
it arises from the procambium as do the v ascular tissues it surrounds.

In eudicots, it also has the capacity to produce lateral roots. Branch roots arise from this primary meristem tissue.
In plants undergoing secondary growth, the pericy cle contributes to the v ascular cambium often div erging into a
cork cambium.

In angiosperms certain molecules within the endodermis and the surrounding v asculature are sent to the pericy cle
which promotes the growth of the root meristems.

Location
The pericy cle is located between the endodermis and phloem in plant roots. In dicot stems, it is situated around the
ring of v ascular bundles in the stele. [1 ]

Function
In dicot roots, the pericy cle strengthens the roots and prov ides protection for the v ascular bundles.

In dicot root, the v ascular cambium is completely secondary in origin, and it originates from a portion of pericy cle
tissue.

The pericy cle regulates the formation of lateral roots by rapidly div iding near the xy lem elements of the root. [2 ]

It has been known to often be confused with other parts of the plant. Howev er, its unique ring structure allows it to
be more easily identified.

Past efforts to isolate such tissue hav e been successful. Monocot roots rarely branch, but can, and this branch will
originate from the pericy cle.
