Chapter 5

Worked Example 1
Q A flux of 0.5 mWb is reversed in a time of 5 ms. If this flux links with a 200 turn coil, determine the emf
thus induced.

Since flux is reversed, then, d 2 5 104 Wb; dt 5 103 S; N 200

Worked Example 2
Q A 10 000 turn coil is required to have an emf of 8 kV induced in it when a change of flux of 1mWb links
with it. Calculate the time interval required for the flux change.

Worked Example 3
Q A conductor 400 mm long is moved at right angles to a uniform magnetic field of density 0.25 T. If
the emf generated in the conductor is 1.8 V, and the conductor forms part of a closed circuit of total
resistance 0.6 , calculate (a) the velocity of the conductor, and (b) the force acting on the conductor.

flux produced is 2 mWb, and (b) the self-induced emf if this current is reduced to zero in a time of 8 ms.

Worked Example 5
Q A flux of 0.2 mWb links with a coil when the current through the coil is 1 A. When this current is
reduced to 0.1 A in a time of 5 ms, an emf of 45 V is induced in the coil. Calculate (a) the number of
turns on the coil, and (b) the self-inductance of the coil. You may assume that the flux is directly
proportional to the current flowing.
